"Hi, kid," the woman said, her voice low and musical, the first ordinary sound Jonny had heard in hours. "I'm Doc-- Carmilla. I'm Carmilla. Are you okay? Where are your parents?"
"Dad's a dead zombie," Jonny said. "Mum's at home. I don't know." Everything he could think to say felt like stupid cheesy horror movie dialogue. Doc Carmilla, concerned and beautiful, had her full attention on him. Jonny thought: everything is over. Anything he said now would be, for whatever value it had, true.
He felt a strange, unnameable emotion halfway between grief and delight. He said, "I'm Jonny d'Ville."
