Summary
Hasegawa Ken was on his fifth year in college, riding a scholarship he won as the leading International Quiz Show Champion. It’s when he finally settled on biochemistry, that he realized he had no real set goals or aspirations to achieve outside of his time as a college student.
Kamimura Kazutoshi has worked four years at Hama’s tattoo parlor as a piercer. He loved it, the job beat cleaning up and driving around dead bodies everyday by a mile. After dropping his tattoo apprenticeship due to health concerns, though, he couldn't help but feel like he has reached the ceiling, clawing desperately to advance himself in life.

The game’s creators, their wardens, wanted him to start thinking like that. They wanted him to be desperate, to cling to life with everything he had, even if it meant destroying somebody else’s.
Unfortunately for them, Kazutoshi had already learned long ago that the world hated him and wanted him dead, and that every single second spent defying that fate was him raising a massive middle finger at God. He had chosen to keep living out of spite, but he refused to do it through the terms set out by the killing game.
And that meant that if he wanted to experience any of those simple, lovely dreams, he was going to have to get everyone out of this alive.

But Atsushi understands. He understands perfectly. There’s a ritual to penance, and the headmaster won’t be satisfied unless Atsushi performs every step. Swallowing down against the mounting nausea, forcing his leaden limbs to move through will alone, and confessing to what he’s done are as much a part of the punishment as the pain that follows.
Atsushi stumbles to his feet, steps forward, and all but crumples into perfect dogeza. It won’t convince them of his remorse — he hasn’t bled enough for that, not yet — but if nothing else, the position does protect his face, at least in the beginning.

After the third trial, Ken mechanically made his way back to his dorm, breaking down as soon as the door was closed. The weight of what he’d lost today finally set in: Kazutoshi was dead, and it was his fault. He cried himself to sleep that night, with regret on his mind.
The following morning, Ken woke up terrified and cold…
Wait, cold?
He heard a voice then, and when he turned his head, he met red, tired eyes. Kazutoshi was there, in his bed. Whole and alive, his head still on his shoulders, his tongue still in his mouth… and absolutely no idea he was supposed to be dead.

She has to imagine that if she’s good, if she just stays unfailingly cheerful and kind, if she just pushes the fear and rage and loneliness somewhere deep and quiet enough, she’ll earn her freedom. Isn’t that how it works in the fairytales she likes so much? Doesn’t a person just have to remain uncorrupted, no matter what they suffer, to be rewarded at the end? Isn’t that the very essence of justice? What sort of world would it be if it weren’t?
Tears, hot and stinging, and the warm blood from her palms both drip onto the floor in steady, staccato beats.
