It’s not until he makes it halfway up the stairs to Rozanov’s bedroom that it occurs to him in a cold rush that it isn’t just anxiety that makes it this hard to breathe.
“No,” he tells himself firmly, white knuckling the bannister and trying to take a deep breath just to prove that he can.

Did you tell JJ yet?JJ’s heart dropped a little bit and his hands began to sweat.
He’s going to feel stupid if he finds out from someone else.
JJ had a week to sort out how he was feeling because practice started next week and as an alternate captain, it was his responsibility to not let personal affairs melt onto the ice. Once that gear was on, he was Montreal Metro’s #16. But it was harder than he expected because he didn’t know what he wanted. The shift was subtle but it was there and getting worse with each passing day: there was no more contact between the two if it wasn't Shane initiating it, no more of JJ resting his chin on Shane's head, no more arms slung across shoulders, no more exaggerated shoulder bumps when passing each other in the hallways. JJ was being very careful, he no longer called Shane by “Capitaine” and was now being formal, calling Shane “Hollander” and “Captain” in a restrained voice, only when spoken to. Shane was quick to notice, because this wasn’t the regular pattern that he was used to when it came to JJ.

There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.

The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.
Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.
Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.
