Kirk… freezes. He freezes for possibly the first time in his life. His fight or flight is reliable and he’s normally able to pick one. But this? This taps on the shit Spock likes to say when they’re both collapsed and panting, at least one of them probably bruised or bleeding, about the enmeshing of katras and their inescapable psionic synergy. It always stirs something very ancient and very uncharacteristic in Kirk and he usually boots Spock out or leaves before he has to really think about it. That ancient, uncharacteristic thing stirs again now.

It’s a low blow. He knows that. Mentioning Spock’s feelings, any of them, especially in a public space in a situation designed so that he can’t argue, is cruel. Kirk is a cruel man. His sadism doesn’t only extend to the physical, though it definitely reaches every nook and cranny of that area—he likes to watch Spock squirm in any context. Fortunately, along with being a dick move, it’s also effective. Spock can’t breathe if he feels he’s been disobedient.
