Work Text:
jungkook groans. he wakes up in the middle of the night only to find himself tangled between seokjin and yoongi. legs all over each other, the screen in front of them pitch black, jungkook somehow manages to rise apart from the other two lovebirds, who lay back in bed with intertwined hands. he heads straight into the washroom as if he’s on auto-pilot mode, not entirely woken up from the sleep that dazed him for the past hour.
eyes filled with sleep, mind hazy like it's between a bed of clouds, jungkook takes a pause in front of the mirror that is placed right beside the entrance to the bathroom. he runs his hand along his messy hair, but something about the reflection makes him question his sanity.
was it the two can of beers he gulped down before that led to the situation that arises right now?
stunned, he starts hiccupping.
"uh-oh ! this definitely wasn’t the time i expected you to finally discover me, but uhm don’t be too surprised, yeah?" he hears the reflection speaking.
jungkook takes in a moment to take in the moment. he starts by questioning if this is his mind playing games with him- a surprising after effect of watching weird, questionable movies for about 6 hours without a break. when sleep seems to knock on his door again, he brushes everything off and makes his way to the couch, making himself small under the blanket and going back to his dreams that call him from afar.
~
when jungkook wakes up with a slight headache the next day as he sits down to take in the breakfast the other two already prepared, the first thing his mind opens up is the thought of a reflection speaking to him last night.
“something very strange happened to me last night guys.” he almost whispers, attracting the attention of both yoongi and seokjin, bursting their lil bubble.
“and kids, this is why you don’t have a horror movie marathon at nights when you feel bored.” yoongi finishes off with a snort, rolling his eyes at jungkook’s strange statement.
“listen im not even kidding ! there was a reflection out there in the mirror that spoke to me….” he trails off, slightly unsure if that’s exactly how it went down last night.
“the mirror seems to be more than fine right now though..?” seokjin speaks standing in front of the same mirror, and jungkook joins him quickly.
there’s no one other than their own reflections that stare back at them. jungkook only stills again, rubbing his eyes as he replays the scene from last night again.
“must be me dreaming shit.” he finally comes to a conclusion, getting back to his breakfast as seokjin and yoongi laugh it off.
~
turns out it wasn't a dream after all.
jungkook prefers to pamper himself with a long, slow hot water bath when he returns back tired from uni that day. he takes in his reflection at the same mirror as last night, half-naked with a towel around his hips, hands again brushing through his newly dyed cherry hair.
"this might come off as weird…but your hair seems soft to be running my fingers through them." the reflection speaks, and jungkook is only left dumbfounded.
he pinches himself, experimenting if this is again another dream.
unfortunately, the scene that unfolded a moment ago in front of his wide doe eyes doesn’t seem to change at all.
"there’s no way you are real and there’s no way i’m seeing the same dream from last night - care to say who are you and how the fuck did you end up in my mirror out of all the fucking mirrors in this vast world?" jungkook says, half-annoyed and half-amused, looking away from the boy who shines bright as his reflection.
"for someone who looks as harmless as a feather, you have a quite rude way of asking for clarity, don’t you think so?" the reflection speaks back, a smirk playing on his pink glossy lips.
“i literally don’t care.” he says, even if his thoughts prove to be just the opposite.
jungkook only looks away from the said person, not wanting to make a fool out of himself by staring for a second longer. the image of the mirror boy doesn’t leave his mind yet,him being the most beautiful boy jungkook had ever laid his eyes on. jungkook only imagines his face to be sculpted to perfection by the greatest gods, the little mole that adores his nose catching his attention.
"are you done staring? you haven't even introduced yourself to me, soulmie." a small pout makes way onto his lips and jungkook only sighs.
“alright- i’ll go first. i’m kim taehyung.”
"and why should i let a stranger know my name?” jungkook asks defensively, making taehyung giggle.
“quit it baby- being this stubborn is really not going to bring you anything other than annoyance.”
jungkook only stares at him now, a moment away from actually giving up, when something strikes his mind diligently.
"soulmie?"
"ahh… there’s a reason why i’m trapped inside this mirror of yours, pretty boy."
“jungkook. jeon jungkook.” the nickname only adds to jungkook’s nuisance, making him roll his eyes.
“jungkook,” taehyung starts, the name sounding beautiful as it smoothly rolls off his tongue.
“i’m your assigned soulmate…..and it is the sole reason why i’m in your mirror out of all the fucking mirrors in this vast world.” taehyung quotes jungkook’s previous questioning, face sporting nervousness yet a small smile pulled up.
jungkook can only stare at him in disbelief, mouth slightly open at the surprising revelation.
taehyung takes another moment to justify himself. "i don’t know if you’re going to take this as good or bad news, but it is what it is. and there’s only one way for me to be free again."
there's no way in hell this is happening, jungkook thinks. he pinches himself a bit too hard, letting out a small groan at the pain. he takes a moment to regain his composure, rethinking words to speak out again and again.
"you haven’t given me anything to believe what you say. how do i know this is not you making fun of me or something?" jungkook stutters a bit, quite nervous at where they will end up with this conversation.
"there is no reason for me to make you anxious with lying. if you need more credible sources to believe me, i only have one incident to talk about."
jungkook listens to him attentively.
“i turned 20 two days ago- and the next morning when i woke up i found myself in another bed, and a mirror that reflected the same home as yours. trust me when i say i was as confused as you are right now- but then, i got a note sticking on the side table across the bed.”
taehyung slips away for a moment, back with the note in his hand, but jungkook can’t read it well as the letters appear to be mirrored too.
“it says that, i’m gonna be trapped in here until my soulmate uhm……” taehyung pauses, looking upto jungkook with eyes full of uncertainty.
it only makes jungkook more anxious. “what is it?” he asks slowly, watching taehyung’s face fall at the question.
“until my soulmate falls in love with me.”
there’s an indescribable pause at the statement, with jungkook instantly looking away from taehyung, and the other awkwardly looks away too, not knowing if speaking anything right now is going to make it right…or even worse.
the both of them stay in silence for a few minutes, before jungkook brings his hand upto scratch his neck, and finally looking back at taehyung.
“well…..that was unexpected.” he speaks slowly, digesting in the fact that he needs to fall in love with taehyung, who’s been a complete stranger to him.
“i’m not forcing you to fall in love with me- i know it’s not fair to you that suddenly a stranger shows up at your door- in your mirror and claims to be your soulmate, not caring about how you’re gonna deal with it, or if you already have someone you love-”
“no.” jungkook says sternly, putting an end to taehyung’s rambling.
“i mean- we can try making it work- but i can’t assure you of anything, yeah? i don’t want to leave you hanging inside a damn mirror world but at the same time i can’t hold myself responsible if this doesn’t work out the way it’s supposed to be.” he justifies himself, still needing time to digest it all.
“that’s more than fine, jungkook-ah. i’m ready to wait for a while and see how this unfolds.” taehyung speaks with a boxy smile, and it somehow seems to tug at jungkook’s heart gently.
they awkwardly wave goodbyes at each other, with jungkook falling back into his bed with a loud sigh- mind filled with taehyung and how he badly wants to make this work. maybe it’s the guilt of having someone in trouble because of yourself, or it’s the way taehyung’s fluttering eyes seem to make an impression on him- jungkook can’t point it out why he’s willing to take on anything to make it happen.
and just like that, he dozes away, the exhaustion wearing him off for the rest of the night.
~
the next morning provides to be quite a surprise, when jungkook almost chokes on the water he's gulping as he walks out of his room, wanting to greet his supposed soulmie.
taehyung stand there, away from the mirror with jungkook’s weights in his hands- working out, or atleast trying to. jungkook stuffs in a giggle at the attempt.
"how did you get access to. . .those?" he questions, and taehyung slightly jolts at his sudden appearance.
he then takes a few steps closer to jungkook, with a playful smile adorning his face.
taehyung peeks into the mirror, and jungkook can’t help but point a finger towards him, in an attempt to confirm his presence in there.
taehyung raises his brows at the gesture, but extends his pinky to touch the other’s anyways.
he is real. embarrassed, jungkook moves back to his original position.
"jungkookie."
he looks up at taehyung.
"as i told you yesterday- i am real, just in the world as you, but in an opposite one."
it's so amusing to jungkook, making him wonder it would be like once taehyung enters his world.
once taehyung falls in love with him.
taehyung’s voice strays him away from the train of thoughts he started a few minutes ago. "i can touch you, i can accept things from you too. so do a thing for me," taehyung's eyes twinkle and jungkook can’t help but slowly nod at that.
"i’m going to die of hunger- I’M IN DIRE NEED OF FOOD !!" he shouts out, and a deflated jungkook only ignores him to step into the kitchen that lazes him out.
the rest of the day goes by rather easily, with jungkook checking up on taehyung a few times as he carries on with assignments for the day. as the sun spreads it’s hues out in the sky at the arrival of night time, jungkook and taehyung sit down to discuss their hatred for coffee over two warm cups of hot choco, all smiles and hearts in the process of melting.
it's nice, jungkook thinks. he didn’t ever mind being alone in a huge apartment that his parents insisted to pay for, and him being wholeheartedly introverted didn’t let him get a roommate either. the only ones he ever had around were yoongi and seokjin, who lived together at a shared home close to jungkook’s - but sitting here, in front of a mirror by sharing hot chocolate that arises a fuzzy feeling within him, jungkook can’t help but smile as wide as he can.
he thoroughly enjoys taehyung’s company.
"what are we having for dinner?" taehyung asks a pout constant on his lips as he finishes through the last sip of his choco cup. there’s a swarm of butterflies that erupt in the other’s stomach, but acknowledging it right now might be a bad idea, jungkook thinks.
"i'm ordering takeout. do you wanna have jjajangmyeon and then bingsu for dessert? or ramen will do??"
"JJAJANGMYEON !!" jungkook grins eye to eye at taehyung's exciting face, wanting to squish his cheeks that rise up whenever he smiles, like a sun that shines brightly throughout the day, spreading it’s glimmer all around.
jungkook only tries to shut down his mind as he looks through different delivery apps, yet a constant image gets stuck at the back of his mind, without warning.
it’s truly looking bad for him.
~
the both of them carry on with their daily lives with each other by their side, boundaries slowly disappearing as they grow closer to each other- you see, flirting comes naturally to taehyung, leaving jungkook flustered for more than half of the day. he brushes it off as just something two friends would do in absence of anyone else, as a way of communicating smoothly, without making it awkward.
yet, there’s a lingering thought at the back of jungkook’s mind, that never seems to leave no matter how much he tries to brush it off.
what if he’s never able to give taehyung the love he deserves? what if taehyung is forever trapped inside the mirror merely because of jungkook? what happens if they drift apart, even if they started with loving each other ? will taehyung return back to his world then?
questions start clouding within jungkook, with answers nowhere to be found. he only looks up with despair in his eyes towards taehyung, trying his best to mask his feelings- and he likes to think that he succeeds at it, because taehyung stands in front of him, slow dancing to an r&b track that jungkook doesn’t quite recognize.
how could he not fall in love with taehyung?
taehyung, an embodiment of the word love, who hates coffee, and prefers mornings over nights any day. taehyung who enjoys every single thing that he does, as if it’s his last day of living. taehyung who
puts his soul into everything and anything, taehyung who smiles like a radiant sunflower that follows the direction of the sun.
and taehyung, who is easy to love.
jungkook doesn’t himself hold back on the love he has for him anymore, but he doesn’t let it out in the open either. he only keeps it to himself, until his heart’s overflowing to the brim, and pours it onto the other little by little, with gestures that would often go unnoticed from another person’s point of view.
if taehyung ever notices the way an extra waffle lands onto his plate, or when jungkook stares at him for a little longer with stars in his eyes, he only smiles a little more wider, heart bursting and happy with what they have right now.

it’s the awaited date night.
jungkook can’t point out well if he’s nervous or excited- there is a certain giddiness that envelops him thoroughly, not knowing what’s coming ahead for him.
over the days, both jungkook and taehyung have gotten awfully closer, with their flirting game up and strong, but there’s also a gentle hug of comfort that they feel around each other making it special. jungkook is almost unable to contain his excitement, as he dresses up in a warm pink hoodie and some shorts that taehyung had earlier thrown away in his room in a response to jungkook teasing him about something the both of them have long forgotten.
something about this night feels different, as if there's still more to what the both of them have right now.
jungkook takes a moment to place all the snacks by the table in front of their projector screen, and then finally places the mirror besides his own seat, watching taehyung hold the sides of his own couch as he experiences a slight jerk at jungkook’s movements.
“you fine there?” jungkook asks, concerned, peaking into the mirror only to see taehyung look at him with the softest smile.
"yeah, im more than fine jungkookie!" taehyung relaxes at the question, eyes shining and his own set of snacks places on the table in front of him.
jungkook focuses on taehyung’s face for a moment- he looks different, and jungkook’s eyes land on the little wing drawn around his pretty eyes. there's a small blush decorating his cheeks, and jungkook doesn’t know if taehyung has taken efforts into dressing up today, or if he’s just naturally blushing with rosy cheeks that pull up when he munches on a pocky stick.
jungkook thinks he might actually just kiss the daylights out of taehyung, not forgetting that one mole on his nose. he's been wanting to do that for a while now.
as soon as the thought pops up in his mind, there’s an alarm in his mind that goes off violently, an alarm of fear and nervousness.
a moment later, jungkook only gathers courage to gulp down on some beer from the can, as taehyung puts on a movie for them to watch.
an hour passes by painfully, with jungkook’s eyes drabbling between the boring movie that he doesn’t even have a gist of, and the person that makes his presence around him known quite easily- even if it’s just a hand brushing around jungkook’s thighs while grabbing the remote to adjust the volume.
and jungkook pretends to feel fine, even if his heart does something everytime there’s a physical touch, as if the north end of a magnet pulls the south end diligently close towards itself.
if this is a game that taehyung aims to win at, jungkook only toughens up to showcase his competitiveness even if it does get a little nerve-wracking when he purposely drops his hand inside the bowl taehyung picks his popcorn from.
there’s a sudden stillness in both of their movements as the fingers touch for a brief moment, not aiming to back away anytime soon.
finally letting out a fresh air of breath that jungkook didn’t know he was holding in, his cheeks spot a mild red blush across as he still feels taehyung’s finger right beside his own.
maybe it’s the warmth that jungkook always imagined taehyung to be wrapped around himself, or maybe it’s the way taehyung suddenly looks at him, with soft eyes that hold love.
love that jungkook doesn’t realize yet.
a moment later, disappointment hits him right in the guts, when taehyung pulls out his hand with ease, handful of popcorn finding way into his mouth, and an expressionless face that annoys the hell out of a rather displeased jungkook.
if he hears the sound of a chuckle from beside him, he pretends to not notice it.
jungkook only moves forward to grab another can of beer, gulping it down with a worrying speed.
"why do you have to be so adorably annoying?" taehyung tries to mumble as quietly as he can under his breath, but jungkook catches it well, only rolling his eyes as he sends a glare in taehyung’s direction.
suddenly, he feels out of breath.
because, the hand that once rested on his knee is suddenly enveloped by another warm hand, fingers tightening their hold around his small ones, and a swarm of butterflies that find home in his stomach.
he swiftly looks to his side, and taehyung looks away.
jungkook takes this oppurtunity to give their intertwined hands a quick squeeze, resting them in the empty space between him and taehyung’s mirror. he rubs gentles circles along taehyung’s warm hands, making the other smile wide as they finally focus on the actual plot of the movie, even if a part of jungkook feels like heaven with the hands never separating again.
they hold hands throughout, even if it gets sweaty by the end of the boring movie, because the both of them would never want to exchange this moment for anything else in the world- all of it being too precious.
jungkook finds himself dozing off all of a sudden - but a quick squeeze from taehyung’s side wakes him up.
"is the alcohol finally getting to you, baby?" taehyung questions, as he peeks at jungkook from the farthest side of the mirror to get a good look of him.
"nooooooo, i’m just tired."jungkook looks at him with wide eyes, feeling a little dizzy from all the beer earlier, but he won’t admit it.
taehyung finds his heart warming up to the scene, like a thick layer of blanket covering him up on a cold winter night. there’s a lingering thought that troubles him constantly- the thought of wanting to kiss jungkook goodnight. the urge only grows as he observes jungkook’s pout growing as each second passes by, unable to reach the remote that lies on the other side of the table.
taehyung almost whines at the loss of contact as jungkook separates their hands, looking away from him.
“taehyungie hyung.” jungkook speaks, finally standing up as he grabs the remote to turn off the projector, hinting towards a wrap for tonight. he sits down in front of the mirror after switching the system off, looking at taehyung with a smile that speaks lengths about what he feels for the other.
“i have a deal.” jungkook speaks slowly, looking into taehyung’s eyes who stares right back at him
"can u sleep on the couch? i wanna see you as i sleep." jungkook giggles in between his words, and taehyung thinks he only falls for the boy more, his feelings that once reached the shore moving away further.
"sleep on the bed, please, no couch allowed." taehyung watches jungkook’s face fall at that, already regretting the words that slipped out of his mouth.
"please? only for today, hyungie." jungkook sure knows the way to taehyung’s heart- puppy eyes and a big frown that doesn’t look good on him.
how could taehyung say no to him? he sighs as he settles down on the couch with his blanket, while a rather drowsy jungkook places the mirror right in front of his couch, the both of them now facing each other.
once jungkook finds solace in staring at the other while making himself comfortable on the couch, he easily drifts off to sleep- mumbling something that taehyung is unable to catch.
taehyung only watches the other with gentle eyes, sleeping away only to meet jungkook right in front of him in his dream land.
like two ships in the night, meeting each other at the shore with an intensity that nobody else could ever match.
~
when jungkook wakes up the next day, he is greeted by a light headache, twisting and turning, disappointed at the lack of space the couch provides him with.
and then it strikes him.
memories from last night flooding in- right from the warm hand that found solace in his own warm ones, to the whining he did last night for taehyung to end up on the couch right in front of him in that cursed mirror.
jungkook slowly peeks at the other, nervousness bubbling within him.
his eyes light up at the sight of a drooling taehyung almost falling off from his couch, rays of sunlight shining upon his angelic face.
jungkook takes a moment to appreciate the view in front of him. if this is what he could wake up to on a daily basis, jungkook doesn't mind risking out on sleep- he can lay there the whole night taking in taehyung’s beauty, and press a kiss onto each mole that adores his face, he thinks.
after an impromptu moment of weirdly staring at his face for a good amount of time, jungkook finally leaves the couch, to freshen up and make breakfast for the two of them.
"taehyungie hyung, you need to wake up right now!!" jungkook messes around with him,
jungkook sees taehyung rustling on the couch, a part of him worried that taehyung might just fall off.
"stop screaming and let me sleep !!! i need sleep to be able to function well in the morning." taehyung mumbles as he pulls on the blankets over his head.
"hyung !!! i need you up right now or i’m gonna devour all of this avocado toast that i diligently made for the both of us." jungkook takes a bite of the toast he made for himself, chewing noises just a little loud for someone to hear well.
when jungkook peaks into the mirror after a minute, he is delighted to see taehyung drowsily brush his teeth, rolling his eyes at jungkook’s appearance in front of the mirror.
when taehyung finally gets himself out of the sleepy state he often is in, he opens his eyes to a semi-naked jeon jungkook running around in the kitchen, with some music that he doesn’t recognize playing in the background. taehyung almost chokes at the sight of his veins that pop out effectively, as jungkook sways his hips to the music that doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon.
taehyung thinks he might go insane at this point of time if he doesn’t get a chance to hold jungkook by the waist.
"don’t you feel fucking cold bro??" taehyung tries his best to sound disappointed, even if that is entirely the opposite of what he feels right now. he gulps down the water placed beside his toast on the table that finds its place in front of the mirror.
jungkook only has a smirk playing on his lips. taehyung is one step away from losing his sanity.
"the sunlight is blessing me with it’s hotness right from the window here, hyung." he answers, as he looks through cooking tutorials on youtube.
"whatever," the elder dismisses him, quietly munching on his toast without another word.
there’s a silence that surrounds them afterwards, but it isn’t awkward or difficult- it’s a comfortable atmosphere shared by the two of them, as they carry on with their different daily chores, occasionally sharing smiles and small words of encouragement to finish up with their works.
as they wind up with their individual to-do’s as the sun sets in later in the afternoon, they get together with a variety of activities right upto their alley- playing games (which definitely got too competitive, but taehyung let his baby win), to baking a batch of cookies for each other. when shades of pink and purple fill in the sky’s canvas, jungkook can’t help but sigh repeatedly, as he leaves taehyung alone for a while to visit seokjin and yoongi for a few hours.
but it’s all worth it at the end, as he returns back to taehyung cooking some delicious ramen for the both of them.
the next time they hold hands is when they have another movie marathon the same night, with jungkook taking the initiative and taehyung spotting a furious blush rising from his neck.
jungkook thinks he is getting attached to having tae by his side every single second that he breathes.
but he only ignores the gnawing feeling for the time being, not knowing what to do about it.
~
it's been exactly three months to the both of them having their lives revolve around each other. even though their physical affection has been limited to only holding hands and occasional kisses on the cheeks, deep down the both of them realize that they hold a bond they could never create with anyone else- why they were assigned to be soulmates right from the beginning. and even if their words remain closed up in those feelings of love, taehyung still holds the hope of entering jungkook’s world soon, moving one step ahead as each day passes by.
today morning finds him brainstorming, with jungkook, the birthday boy leaving home with a grumpy face for his university classes. taehyung takes it as a cue to plan a surprise for him, roping in seokjin and yoongi to help him out too. the two of them help taehyung get everything he wants for the surprise, while taehyung takes his sweet time to decorate it all around.
he enhances the side of the mirror he lives in, with purple shades of balloons lying around, and a simple happy birthday banner put up on the wall. it takes a while for the decorations to automatically appear on jungkook's side of the mirror, which taehyung was quite nervous about but he jumps around in excitement with the way it all unfolds beautifully.
he prepares for the evening by ordering all of jungkook's favourite dishes, and makes a strawberry cheesecake by putting into use jungkook’s baking lessons.
the excitement of planning it all didn't let taehyung sleep the night before, which now leads to taehyung drowsing off in the washroom, a phone in hand while he was texting jungkook.
koo ☆:
i’ll be home in 3o-45 minutes !!
see u soon <3
30 minutes in, and jungkook walks into the apartment, eyes tired and his curiosity rising as he a purple balloon greets him at the door. he walks into the room slowly, lips automatically pulling up into a wide smile as he encounters the swarm of his favourite coloured balloons hurdling around his legs. he looks at the banner that is placed on the wall, with a little heart balloon right below it.
“happy birthday baby !!” it says, and jungkook feels his heart race a little more swiftly, eyes searching for a certain someone who seemed to have planned this whole setup.
"taehyungie, i’m home…..what are you upto?" he speaks casually as he drops down his bag on the couch, peaking into the mirror to look for the other.
there’s a wave of anxiety that flows through him suddenly, as he calls out taehyung a few more times, but there is no response from the other side.
there's no way taehyung has escaped right?
he stills as he stands by the couch. there’s no sign of taehyung around, except for all the decorations that he prepared before jungkook arrived- he calls out his name harshly for one last time.
as questions start running through his mind with each second passing by, a sudden voice of a door opening startles him- making him look behind, only to experience a scene that he had only ever dreamt of.
taehyung steps out of his bathroom, rubbing his eyes in confusion.
and then it hits him too.
the two of them stand facing each other, taking in the fact that this isn’t a dream they’re experiencing.
they walk towards each one step at a time, hearts beating faster and eyes never leaving each other. taehyung looks ethereal up close, wearing jungkook’s cardigan and taking his breathe away. on the other hand, taehyung only focuses on the mole under jungkook’s plump glossy lips, and how he just wants to kiss him senseless.
as soon as they are the closest to each other, taehyung extends his pinky finger towards jungkook, who only looks at him with confused eyes, before realizing what taehyung intents to do. their pinkies meet in the middle, a proof to how real everything around them is at this moment.
taehyung doesn’t waste another second to wind his arms tightly around jungkook, and he instantly feels him nuzzle his nose, taking in taehyung’s lavender scent.
the touch is everything taehyung had imagined it to be- jungkook’s face fits perfectly under taehyung’s neck, all warm and comfortable, and taehyung only wishes to somehow freeze the time.
they separate after some minutes that rather felt like hours to the both of them. jungkook lands a light, feathery kiss on the mole that adores taehyung's cute nose. he giggles at the gesture, hands never letting go of jungkook's waist.
"happy birthday my star. the only star that shines the brightest under my dark, plain sky." taehyung whispers between the both of them, before meeting jungkook’s lips with softness.
"you're the best birthday gift i could ever have." jungkook means it, his heart beating louder than ever as he kisses taehyung back, not wanting to ever let go.
having your soulmate come across from a mirror world doesn’t sound too bad now, if it meant to love and to be loved with an intensity that touched the skies.
