Summary
Ilya was trying to do the math in his head. How did one dopey man and one assertive woman create Shane, who was neither? Although, as he watched David fidget and avoid eye contact, the pieces were starting to fall into place. He wondered if David was as easy to fluster as his son.
"So, I hear you played for McGill."

Summary
The universe had decided Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were perfect for each other, so it sent them an unmistakable sign. Unfortunately, the two of them have a lot of practice in mistaking things. So the universe tries again, and again.
Or: how many soulmate tropes does it take to get two oblivious hockey boys together?
“Dude, did you get a tattoo?”
Shane looked over. Shelly, who had the stall next to his at the CN Sports Complex locker room, was staring at Shane’s left arm.
“Uh, no?”
“What the fuck is it, then? Looks gnarly as hell.”
Shane looked down at the dark squiggly shape on his delt, an irregular blob slightly bigger than a loonie. Its edges were a series of indentations and protrusions, kind of like a jigsaw puzzle piece. If he’d seen this on anyone else, he would’ve assumed it was a tattoo, too. A shitty one that should be lasered off ASAP.
“I don’t know,” he said. “It kinda showed up out of nowhere, like, last night.”- Language:

Summary
Shane’s immediate reaction is to say that he doesn't know when it started. He doesn’t know who his soulmate is. This is what he’s been telling himself for years, because if he stops for more than a second to think about how long he's been collecting little pieces of Ilya Rozanov, he thinks he'll spiral out of control.
He'll hit the deck like a firecracker dropped unceremoniously onto the sidewalk, burning wildly and spiralling haphazardly, until he's fizzled out with nothing left to show for himself but smoke, ashes, and the knowledge that his soul is bound to Rozanov's.
or:
shane hollander spends twenty-five years not thinking about his soulmate. the drawer in his apartment filled with cigarettes, toothpaste, and awful t-shirts says elsewise.

Every time your soulmate lies, their words are written on you.
Shane doesn’t lie often. His soulmate does though.
