Summary
Rio nods, eyes wide in amusement. "Let us not disturb her then in the great frog hunt."
They walk slowly by the edge of the water, Rio carefully checking under rocks and Nicky gently poking into lumps of mud.
After one such poke fails to produce a frog, he stands and sees Rio's focus now on him. Their facial expression so similar to what he sees from Mama looking down at him when they walk side by side. The same feeling of being loved fills him.
"Are you my mother?" Nicky tilts his head to the side, one eye squinting, forehead crinkled by thoughts. "Or my father?"
Rio smiles, syrupy slow. "I'm whomever you want me to be."

Six times Nicky sees Rio before he dies and one time afterwards.
