A tangle of ginger hair appeared in front of El as the girl squatted down to help her pick up the ruined paper, a tanned, freckled face barely half-visible as she searched the ground.
El noticed the skateboard next to her.
“One of your friends?”
The girl laughed dryly.
“Sometimes, I guess. Not a close one. He’s kind of rude.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” El replied, trying to sound annoyed but smiling despite herself. “I’m El, by the way.”
“Max. You a NYU student?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
