He would hug Grant, is the thing. If he asked, Roy would wrap him in the kind of hug that makes Lian go limp with relief after a nightmare. The kind of hug that he learned from Ollie and Brave Bow before him. The kind of hug that kids are supposed to get from their dads. He lived for those hugs in the way a lonely kid always does. Leaning into it because for all the problems and the bitterness, Ollie never laid a hand on him like that. He remembers the sting of that slap, then thinks about Ollie looking him in the eye and telling him it's okay, you can shoot me if you need to.
It feels a little like that, crouched in front of Grant while he's on the verge of blowing up. Like this kid could turn him to dust and he wouldn't blame him at all. Because he's just that. A scared kid trying to fight someone that's already dead and gone.
John Emerson is lucky he died before Roy ever got ahold of him.
