Most infants cried upon entering the world, as though even then they understood the cruelty that awaited them. The twins had not. From the moment the healers placed them in their parents’ arms, they knew something was wrong, and in desperation Chief Arnook carried his daughters to the Spirit Oasis to beg the Great Spirits for mercy. There, in the hush of sacred water and moonlit mist, he prayed to Tui and La to save his heirs. The spirits answered. Tui, the moon spirit, chose the younger twin, stripping Yue’s hair of every trace of pigment until it shone white as moonlit snow. Meanwhile, La, the ocean spirit, chose Xing Hua, darkening the upper half of her hair to the color of the deepest depths of the sea before letting the lower half fade into silver, like moonlight spread across dark water.

If their grandchildren ever asked how they met… Well, they’d need to come up with a better story, no doubt.
