Shane’s thoughts ran a million miles a minute. The words clogging his throat struggled to form into coherency as a metaphorical countdown loomed over him. Stop staring at him, goddamnit. Introduce yourself.
“I didn’t order anything.” He sputtered. Incredible. Shane Hollander was a complete and utter loser.

A blaring alarm yanked him out of his panic like a fish out of water. He shot upright, flailing his limbs that were caught in something soft. Blurred splashes of colour steadily painted a picture of a bedroom he’d recognise anywhere. It was brighter now, light pouring in through partially shut curtains. His breath was heavy and he struggled making sense of how the hell he’d ended up in bed when just a moment ago, Ilya had–
“Hollander.” Ilya slurred, narrowing his eyes at him. “Turn that thing off.”

When Ilya finally found him, Shane sat with his legs tucked into his chest, arms looped around his calves. His head was angled towards the wind and his gaze–
It was cold, vacant.
As if he’d died just before Ilya showed up. A dwindling flame frozen in time and the world had yet to catch up. It felt too familiar to a scene two decades ago. Ilya’d been so excited to show her something, but the what had slipped from his mind years ago, replaced with gaunt eyes and pale skin.
“Moy solnyshko?” Ilya said. He wasn’t sure if the words had enough weight to land audibly with his mind drifting elsewhere. Shane didn’t even stir. His mother hadn’t either. He lurched forward, fingers clasped around Shane’s shoulder. “Shane–”
Shane turned towards him owlishly, blinking. His eyebrows lifted a beat after.
“Ilya,” Shane exhaled, a tired smile tugging at his lips. “When did you get here?”

It was oddly sweet. As dense as the rest of him, but sweet. Hayden didn’t know what to make of that, but it felt nice having someone simply acknowledge that it was shit.
It was shit, for crying out loud. All of this was so shit.

Shane Hollander is the sole Omega within the NHL. He’s been running from his own instincts since the moment he first presented and lives his life akin to that of a Beta; scentless, never nesting, and without a heat cycle. Any failure to conform to these ideals would result in being outcast from his peers and by the league altogether.
