    “Carl and I made a baby,” Grace says into the phone, his fingers clasped around a petri dish. He rotates it admiringly, and Carl watches from the other side of a plexiglas panel.

    Carl and I made a baby.

    Carl is vibrating with excitement, partially because this is the first major breakthrough they’ve had since Grace was roped into this mess a couple weeks back, and partially because there’s a specific kind of intimacy in hearing his name in Grace’s voice and watching his mouth move around the syllable.

    Grace had said to him, not that much earlier, we’re fathers, and beamed at him with honest, unadulterated pride. And Carl had beamed back, because when you’re a multi-use security guard in charge of a disgraced molecular biologist, it’s not hard to get excited over these kinds of discoveries. They had shared in that pride, and truthfully, it had been innocent on Carl’s behalf until that phone call.

    There's a pause as Grace's mind works a million miles a second. He takes a deep breath, now more nervous. More.. quiet.
    "...Friend dinner?"
    "No." He says quieter.

    His face heats up as he thinks, swallowing then looking away as if ashamed. "Oh.. Carl I.. I'm sorry I don't..I don't date. Not anymore-” Ryland looks away, rubbing his arm as if ashamed at this fact. “I just.. It's not you-"
    "We don't have to date." Carl states, in that professional tone he used when serious.

     

    or the one where Ryland and Carl fail at being friends with benefits.. even 30 years later when Grace returns to Earth and Carl still loves him.

    Ever since Grace and Rocky landed on Erid, Rocky has been glued to Grace’s side, refusing to leave him alone. Grace is worried about his friend. Rocky has not even seen his mate more than a handful of times since they arrived. This is, obviously, a problem. He doesn’t want to keep Rocky away from the love of his life.

    Grace isn’t as sick anymore. He doesn’t need Rocky at his side all the time. Grace will do what he has to do so that Rocky and Adrian can resume living a normal life together. So what if Grace struggles to be alone? This is for Rocky’s sake. He’ll be okay.

    But Grace has severely underestimated how much he needs Rocky, and how much Rocky needs him.

    Let it not be said that Adrian was not devoted as well. They had stood firm, a loyal widower longer than others could fathom. Once you encountered a love like Rocky’s, there could be no replacement. Nothing could even compare.

    ‘Do you understand that?’ Adrian wanted to ask. So desperately, they wanted the alien’s reply. ‘Are you the only other creature in the universe who understands what it is like to be loved by someone so completely?’

    Adrian meets Grace several times, before Grace is healthy enough to meet them in return. Despite light-years of distance between their species, Adrian might have finally met the first other being who appreciates Rocky like they do; or so they hope.
