Summary
Ilya always craved for validation.
Impersonal, vain, lighthearted validation. So much so, it had him running away to Canada.The vastness and anonymity of the internet gave him just what he wanted – Tumblr, a place where being judged was almost unthinkable and getting compliments about his body without much commitment or effort was ridiculously easy.
But as the bubble he had built for himself in a faraway land burst in the shape of a threat and he accidentally reveals things he'd rather keep hidden, a flash of empathy and freckles on a screen were maybe enough to keep him afloat.
Or,
Ilya accidentally posts a vent on his aesthetic Tumblr account, and gets an ask he didn't expect in return from a pretty college student with pretty freckles.
He didn't expect it to bleed into his real life.

Summary

____Sliding down the wall, Shane hunched over his untied sneakers, shoved on hastily when Coach had called him in for a meeting after morning skate.
“Boston wanted you specifically. I’ve already spoken to their GM. You’re flying this evening or tomorrow morning: I’ll confirm once the paperwork clears.”
“Mom,” Shane managed.
“Oh sweetie. I know, okay. Those fuckers, how dare they do this! Two fucking cups! Now all of a sudden they decide they want a reset and you’re going to fund it.”
Shane put his head between his knees and tried to breathe. God, Boston. They hated him there; it was so far away; he was fucking their captain.

Summary
Ilya's life is perfect. He's the captain of the best team in the league, he gets to play hockey with his husband every day, and he finally has the kind of family he only ever dreamed about as a boy.
And then one phone call from Russia changes everything. His brother and his sister-in-law are dead and Ilya has been named guardian of his 14 year old niece in his brother's will.
It's not even a question of whether or not to bring his niece to Canada. Ilya just doesn't expect that navigating life with a grieving, traumatized, and stubborn teenager would be end up being the hardest thing he's ever done.
