Meeting Philip Wittebane was like a dream. He laughed at Luz’s jokes and said all the right things and looked at her with such a sweet, sensitive intensity that it made Luz’s stomach twist and a fire burn deep inside her. Then Lilith got attacked by the stone sleeper and Luz had the helmet ripped off her head.
After that, it became a nightmare.
Now, with his free hand, Philip wretched open the cellar door. Luz got one second to peer down the dark stairwell—steep, uneven stone steps which sunk into unfinished earth, likely carved with a glyph—before Philip swung her forward past his hip.
She made a small arc in the air, crashed into the third or fourth step. She did a somersault, then continued to pitch and tumble. Blunt pain and bruises bloomed over her skin, already tender from Philip’s rough hand.
“It pains me, it truly does, that I need to resort to such measures.” Philip spat above her. “However, I believe that some time down here will help you... Straighten yourself out.”
