"Tell me a story," Shizuo says. "To pass the time."
Izaya quirks an eyebrow at him. "What makes you think I'm a good storyteller?"
Your voice, Shizuo thinks. "A gut feeling," he says instead.
Izaya chuckles, but then he looks up into the cloudless sky. "There's a story my mother used to tell me," he says. "It's about an emperor who owned groves and groves of apple trees, and wanted to find the best one..."
It's their second summer of high school. Shizuo Heiwajima has found a summer job as a farm hand. Izaya Orihara is on a rare family vacation, out in the countryside with no people to watch and no internet access. Left with nothing else to do, Izaya decides to wander around the local apple orchard. Their paths cross, Izaya steals an apple, and Shizuo throws a wheelbarrow at him.

Summary
When he realizes the near-fatal stabbing wasn't enough to discourage Orihara's interference in his business, Yodogiri Jinnai decides to escalate to something beyond simple violence. Sure, he could just kill Orihara, but what fun would that be? What he wants is blackmail, something devastating enough to stop Orihara's pursuit of him dead in its tracks. Finding nothing of use, he decides his only other option is to create what he needs. And since he's well aware of the lucrative underground market for pretty young men, and how much wealthy men will pay to do whatever they want to them... why not kill a few birds with the same stone?
Izaya stumbles from the warehouse that night, bleary and disoriented, his body hurting in ways he can't bear to think about. He wants to go home; he wants to disappear from the city as easily as if he'd never existed. Maybe he would have found a way to do just that if he hadn't collapsed part-way through the journey and been discovered... by none other than Shizuo.

Summary
Before the trip has even begun, Shizuo wants it to be over. He doesn't like being outside of his comfort zone, especially when he has absolutely no choice in the matter, especially when Izaya's there too. This trip will be hell, he tells himself, but there's always a chance he's underestimating how much things can change in just a few days.
