Summary
Bucky Barnes, certified dork and generally uncool nerd, starts 9th grade without friends and still carrying a torch for Steve Rogers, all round popular kid and star athlete at school who is so far out of Bucky's league he may as well be the moon.
Then Bucky makes a new friend, new student and fellow dork Kamala Khan.
Kamala is putting together a band, which is certainly a lot cooler than anything Bucky has ever done and he gets swept along for the ride, gaining new friends and a newfound confidence on the way.
Which is just when Steve Rogers seems to notice him, and Bucky wonders if the moon isn't so far out of reach after all.

It would be complicated enough, but the anonymous reviewer for the local free arts newspaper hates them as much as their lead guitarist hates Debbie Gibson (though not as much as he hates it when people point out what terrible decisions he makes while drunk).
Not to mention that their lead singer's personal life is about to explode in ways he's been trying to avoid since ninth grade, their rhythm guitar player is struggling to stay clean, their drummer's wife is pregnant again, their bassist might be leaving, and nobody knows what the hell is going on with the keyboard player. She inches forward, her feet perched precariously close to the edge of the roof, her fingers gripping the metal rail. The cool night breeze whips her red curls back from her face as she breathes it in. She wonders if this is how her father felt, if this means she’d gotten the worst parts of him after all. She thinks of her mother and of Cal, how this would slam a wrecking ball into all their plans. The thought of it is suddenly wildly delicious, in a way that frightens her.
Rose takes a steadying breath and leans into the stillness. Maybe she can simply stay up here forever, perched over the town like a gargoyle. Maybe she can somehow will herself to become a Gorgon like Medusa. She pictures herself, her curls a tangle of snakes, her gaze silencing the gossip and the rumors with a single, terrible glance. Rose feels herself sway forward again.
The voice comes from behind her then, equal parts pleading and commanding, and it’s as though she’s been waiting for it, summoning it. Hearing it is like feeling a cool breeze on a hot afternoon or surfacing from underwater. It’s like coming up for air. It shocks her back to herself with three words:
“Don’t do it.”

The other man stops talking, looks straight at him. And Trent was wrong, the look he had fixed on him earlier was not a smile, not really. Because now he is smiling at him, and it is nothing short of a beam, bright and open, and there are dimples, and even though the other man has a face that is more narrow than not, all Trent can think of as he looks at him is ‘corn fed’.
Trent does a year abroad in the states, gets assigned a football player as a roommate and has his life turned upside down. It's all horribly cliched, until it isn't.
