“You’re fucking hurt and you still tried to help me.” Lo’ak finally met his brother’s eyes. “You shouldn’t have done that.”
Neteyam’s face softened, and he reached out to grip both of his shoulders. “That was my decision. Just like everything else was my decision. You don’t get to carry that.”
But in fact Lo’ak was carrying it. He felt the weight of it with every breath. The guilt that had been building since the ship, since the bullet, since the moment he’d pulled Neteyam from the water and felt his brother’s blood warm between his fingers.
OR
Neteyam survives the shot, but Jake still looks at his other son as if it’s his fault. Lo’ak doesn’t survive that he was the reason it happened, and the rifle does its job. He dies.

A little hand rests on his knee, and he tears his eyes away from Neytiri to see Tuk blinking up at him. “Spider?” she says in this meek little voice that’s so hesitant it makes him ache. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Yeah, of course,” Spider sets down his plate and hunches over to meet her eyes. He’s never known her to be this serious, her eyes big and round. “You can ask me anything.”
She fiddles with her songcord, curled up in her lap, the beads clicking and clanking against her nails, but she’s so brave, the bravest of all, and she doesn’t look away, meeting his gaze even when his own instinct is to pull back. “When you were with the Sky People for that long time, did they hurt you?”
