Ryland Grace has tattoos. Four, to be exact, and Simon assumes they must mean something important—something intentional, cultural, and understood. On Eden, after all, their tattoos always are.
But Grace’s ink doesn’t behave like symbolism. Instead, they are road maps through his life, a physical manifestation of a messy, painful, and confusing past. And, the more Simon learns about them, the more he realizes they were never meant to be seen as art at all.
Simon keeps looking anyway.

So there he sat, calm in the bed that belonged to the man he logically should fear. Watching as gentle hands placed the final cards in two, even decks.”War is a game in which opponents must lay down cards against each other in rapid succession, attempting to win not only cards played, but the entire deck. There is no strategizing, no planning, you're not even allowed to view your cards; it is entirely luck based. The player requirement is a flat two, and Grace just so happened to have stumbled upon a classic deck. There's only one other man around for light-years, and he definitely intends on playing. A self indulgent fic involving the authors favorite card game.

One strong arm wrapped around Grace and pulled him into a warm, solid surface as he began to sob. He’d been afraid before, but nothing had scared him as much as realizing he had no choice in the matter.
“You’re not a coward. Fear doesn’t make you a coward; it makes you human.”
“Grace not coward. Grace brave. Grace Rocky heroes, statement. And Simon.”
That elicited a laugh from Grace, which helped him to catch his breath and calm back down.
“You’re not a coward,” Simon repeated, releasing his grip on Grace before he sat back to see him better. “If that makes you a coward, then that means I’m a coward, and I may be a lot of things, but I know I’m not a coward.”
OR
Simon has dealt with nightmares his whole life, even before his exploration of AT-5. He knew Grace got them sometimes, too, but he'd never seen him have one before. That is, until he does.
