Enjin exhales. He tips his head back, lets it thump against the brick hard enough to hurt, maybe hard enough to knock some fucking sense back into himself.
Eight years was a long time. Not seventeen, but twenty-five, all grown up and devastatingly lovely. So much was the same: the long swan's neck, the way his mouth turned down at the corners and made him look spoiled, the deep shadowed blue of his eyes.
Still so different. Eight years. No more tremor in his artist's hands, spine straight, hair worn long down his back and clothes that were decidedly feminine.
How could Enjin have recognized him? How could he not? His fragile little bird-boy, but not. Not really his, not anymore.
Enjin can't calm the rabbit-chase of his own thoughts. They loop, then snag, getting trapped on the sticky parts, the things he doesn't want to remember at all, and then loop again. The greatest hits of his own worst choices— a fuckup 'till the end.

This particular night, Demyan can’t help but notice that Flins and Varka are still on that first bottle of ice wine, glasses still half-full on the table in front of them. At some point during the night, Varka had eased his entire body into the sofa cushions until he was sprawling over more than half of it, his right thigh and foot pressed up against’ Flins’ own. Varka’s arm is wrapped around Flins’ shoulders and he’s laughing.
The flush in Varka’s cheeks and glimmer of mirth in Varka’s eyes leaves Demyan with the impression that Varka may not have stopped laughing over the past few hours.

Summary
Benched for a couple months due to a concussion, Aki Hayakawa is living his own personal level of hell. He can't practice with his team, can't run drills, can't risk taking any hits.
His coach manages to pull a few strings, getting him access to a nearby figure skating rink for some exercise during his off-time. He also, unfortunately, includes non-optional figure skating lessons from a local figure skating hotshot.
It's just really unfortunate that Angel is pretty. Makes it hard to ignore the fact that he's an asshole.

Even the Lux Arrow streaking across the sky cannot inspire the kind of overawed terror this boy instills in him. Mouth dry, Jing Yuan smiles shakily and attempts a delicate rejection, clasping one of those tiny outstretched hands to lower it. But when the kid realizes what’s happening, his crestfallen expression makes Jing Yuan feel like someone has run a sword straight through his heart, and he folds like wet paper, gathering the child up in his arms.
Jing Yuan’s sudden reversal has the child giggling with delighted surprise, and oh.

Of course he wants to die.
He wants to die just as much as he wants to live. Just as he is now devil and human, just as Angel is both beautiful and monstrous. Aki swallows the smoke and it kills him a little, just as it makes life a little more liveable in return. That's how it's been for most of his life.
"That's not what this is about," he says simply, unable to explain it.
Alive, Aki has survived by selling away his heart. Alive, Angel's memories have come back along with guilt. They find solace and understanding in the only person who sees them for what they are.

Angel looks up at him with those nightshade-lethal eyes, long hair askew like he's been running, flushed to the tip of his nose. The overhead lamp casts harsh shadows across his face. Aki watches him like one might some kind of feral cat, half drunk on anxiety and affection alike. His pulse is skittish. He can feel it hammering against the hollow of his throat.
"Are you afraid?" Angel whispers, resting his chin against Aki's thigh.
"No," Aki says.
"You look afraid."
"I want to kiss you," he admits.
Or, Aki loathes all devils. Perhaps he would loathe Angel too, if only he could see him as one.

His eyes trail over how Angel tenses under his touch, how his wings puff out and he tilts his head to the side, blinking slowly as if even that is too much work.
Then, the scent hits Aki again, thick enough it coats his tongue in sugary vice — the scent of an Omega close to their heat, a scent undoubtedly emanating from Angel.

The idea of subjugating something as powerful as that sends a surge of intrigue stuttering through his body despite himself.
