Lena lets out a careful breath and says, “James and I have decided to end our— association.”
What a perfectly weird and roundabout way to describe the end of a romantic relationship, Kara thinks. “Oh?” she says, aptly demonstrating her own comparative lack of eloquence.
It earns her one of Lena’s crinkly smiles at least, affection clear on her best friend’s face. “Should I feel offended that you don’t seem all that surprised?” she flusters.
“No,” Kara says, “I am,” and she is, is the thing, she's actually stunned, but she’s something else, much more than that.
She’s elated.
“Bummer,” Kara says.

“I wanted to ask if I could… stay the night.”
Keyleth can tell from her tone that this is flirty, effectively a proposition, and one she wants so badly to agree to. But she knows Vex, knows her propensity for one-night stands and “no strings attached” sex. And she knows herself, knows that this would only deepen her attraction to Vex, and to have her just once and never again? That would probably hurt more than never having her at all.
This all flashes through her mind, but Vex is sitting in front of her, eyebrow quirked, dark hair loose and falling in gentle waves over one shoulder. Keyleth knows that logically, she shouldn’t do this. Alcohol tends to make logic seem a little silly, especially when it’s Vex, and she looks like she wants to devour Keyleth.
“You’re always welcome to stay the night.”

Summary
During a journey through the wild lands of Tal'Dorei, Keyleth hopes to get a little closer to Vex'halia, the only one of the group who shares her love of nature, but her clumsiness drives them to confrontation instead. They're ranger and druid, instinct pushes them to protect their territory and to reject the other by establishing their superiority over each other. To resolve the situation without bloodshed, they issue a hunting challenge, but one of them may have chosen an unexpected prey.

“Scanlan, why can’t you just go yourself?” Keyleth asks, for the third time, admittedly whining a little from her perch on the edge of her bed.
“I can’t just show up without an entourage! This band has nothing on me!” Scanlan declares. “You and the rest of my people need to come to flank me, so that they know I outnumber them in support!” He takes advantage of her low height to tap her on her antlers, like she should know this already. She makes a little noise of protest.
