Applause broke out amid the Court, and Rhaenyra smiled at her. A full, unguarded smile. Alicent did duck her head then, her face redder than the Keep, but her father did not notice this time.

[“I do not intend to kill you, Alicent,” she managed to utter.
Her tongue was molten glass in her mouth. She lifted a hand to the wall of cell for support and found it sticky with moisture. Fighting the urge to turn around and leave the cramped space, she turned her eyes to the curled-up silhouette.
Alicent choked on her next breath, a noise clawed out of her stripped of its humanness. It sounded so terribly tired.
“What good are you to me, then?” Alicent finally whispered, voice as empty as her eyes.
They were still glued to the wall on her left, even as her fingers relaxed their grip on the dirty cot to rest, lifeless, by her sides.]

But to Alicent's eyes she was lost, as she watched her trembling frame straighten up at the sight of her, eyes boring into hers, as if asking, do you see me now? Do you see what I have become? she realized that this was the biggest, the most consuming feeling of loss she had felt.
Alicent has seen Rhaenyra's cold gaze following her after she married Viserys. She remembered how the girl looked at her with disdain, how her words were more bitter than her actions. All these years of anger, hatred, denial and yet, for the first time in her life, Alicent could not recognize her anymore.
And that realization sends jolts of paralyzing dread through her body. Because, god's be good, if she's lost so is the whole realm.
