Summary
Emily needed her job. She loved fashion and it was the main thing keeping her going. When you live a life immortal, you need to have a large goal in mind. Most vampires aimed for world domination or to have a harem of hundreds of women. But not for Emily. Her desire belonged with her love for style.
Because of her care, she’d made sure to never attack any of her co-workers. And she’d stuck to that. Despite the beauty of some of them, they didn’t have too strong of an aroma of blood she craved so deeply. And she was happy for it to stay that way.
Until Andrea Sachs came along.

She had prepared. This was the part Emily found genuinely alarming. Andy had acquired face paint, red, white, and blue, in little pots, arranged on the bathroom counter beside Emily's serums like a threat. She had bought a packet of tiny American flags on cocktail sticks, the sort of thing that ordinarily garnished a cupcake, and had distributed them around the living room with the solemnity of a general planting standards. And she had, that morning, attempted to paint a flag on Emily's cheek.
“Absolutely not,” Emily had said, leaning away from the approaching sponge with her whole spine.
“Just a little one. Just a tiny one. On the cheekbone. It'll be cute.”
“I am English.”
“Okay, but for one afternoon—”
“I am English, I have dignity, and I believe face paint on an adult should be grounds for arrest. On any adult. In any circumstance. I would testify.”
“You'd look so patriotic.”
“To a country that is not mine. Andrea, put the sponge down. Put it down. I will pour that pot of blue paint into your handbag, and I will not feel a thing.”
Or: Andy gets World Cup fever. Emily remains entirely unaffected.
