“Sleep. I watch,” he warbles from his post at the door. The first thing he’s said to me in hours. We haven’t talked about anything yet, aside from his pushing to prove I wasn’t hiding more contraband. I scowl at him.
“Don’t want to.” I feel like one of my kids with the level of petulance that seeps into my voice. I miss my kids. I miss having a place. I have a place here, I need to accept it’s just… Different. Still, I’m not gonna listen to Rocky right now.
Rocky grumbles at me. “Scientists say Grace hasn’t slept in 32.6 hours.” Jeez, has it really been that long? I don’t think I’ve had an all-nighter that bad since college. “Cognitive impairment begins after only 24. Bad decisions, dangerous thoughts like you mention. Why you are sick.”
“You left me.” I didn’t mean to say that. Too late.
or Grace is having a hard time adjusting to life on Erid, and it only gets worse when Rocky disappears. They work it out.

I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.

‘To be fair,’ Adrian began, the chords tinged with amusement, ‘you can’t even win against either of us at regular chess, so I don’t see why this would have been any different.’
‘Shut up,’ Grace shot back cleverly.
‘You even had an advisor this time,’ Rocky said, still snickering. ‘You had Adrian as an advisor. And you still lost.’
Grace swivelled to glare daggers at him. ‘It’s 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel! Each game lasts, like, a million hours, and my brain checks out after the first ten!’
‘Yeah, we could tell.’
Adrian and Rocky are over at Grace's house for the night, and Adrian loves their idiots to death, even if they are idiots.
