Summary
The man winces with the familiar sting. Rejection after rejection, every single day of his life.
Now the stories are the same again, but one’s more light hearted than the other. It shows the affection, the love he so longed to feel, the love he’s been idolising his whole life. He found somebody in this tale, and he likes this outcome much more than the other where he’s left to die alone. The other one, it portrays betrayal, fighting. The lover is met with more rejection there than anything, it portrays a death.
He died because of love.

The first time Rolan brings it up is on an autumn night in senior year. They’re on the verge of greening out, so high things don’t feel real, laying on the floor of Rand’s parents’ attic.
“Y’know, I wish you were a girl.”
It breaks the silence like the tolling of a bell. The clock ticks over to three in the morning.
“Whaddya mean?” Rand asks.
“It’d be easier. Easier than living… living like this.”
Rolan doesn’t elaborate any further.

The stairs lead up to a little deck that Scott’s decorated. It’s obviously been made for two. Two seats, two beds, one umbrella to share. He swallows down the - well it’s not jealousy exactly, there’s probably a better word to describe it - that was building up inside of him.
His place isn’t next to Scott anymore. It hasn’t been for a while now.
He knows this.
