    The plan had seemed simple. It was a “for want of a nail,” situation, wasn’t it?

    If Yue Qingyuan hadn’t been locked in the Ling Xi caves, he would have made it to the Qiu estate in time to rescue Xiao Jiu. If Shen Qingqiu was not a bitter person with ruined cultivation, he would not be so jealous of young Luo Binghe. And if Shen Qingqiu did not torment Luo Binghe when he was a disciple, and if Yue Qingyuan did not simply let it happen out of guilt, Luo Binghe would not have a reason to destroy Cang Qiong Mountain Sect.

    So all Shang Qinghua had to do to save this ill-fated world (and most importantly, his own skin) was stop a young and desperate Yue Qingyuan from trying to force a connection with his future spiritual sword too soon.

    Easier said than done.

    Swallowing thickly, Shang Qinghua goes to kneel before Shen Qingqiu with the small table between them. When Shen Qingqiu’s thin eyebrows begin to furrow with displeasure, he suppresses a sigh and does what is probably a horribly unattractive shuffle until the furrow evens out, and he’s left sitting at more of an angle with the other man, his knee almost brushing Shen Qingqiu’s expensive-looking robes.

    Somehow, Shang Qinghua has found himself in a—situation-ship? friend-ship? some other -ship word he isn't aware of? with the Scum Villain of all people.

    If Shang Qinghua tilted his head and squinted, Shizun was probably the closest thing he had to a father figure. This was a pretty fucking sad state of affairs, considering Shang Qinghua hadn't been promoted until he was -- what? How old was he? Eighteen? Nineteen? Twenty, twenty-one, who even cared?

    The point was that Shizun hadn't paid Shang Qinghua any individualized attention until he'd been, at the very least, a core disciple, and at that point, Shang Qinghua was pretty damn grown. When you were grown, you didn't need a father figure. When you were an adult, you outgrew fathers. You had to; you didn't have a choice. You turned eighteen and then your dad gave up the illusion that he ever wanted you to begin with. If you still needed a dad at that point, then you were pretty screwed, weren't you?

    Shang Qinghua was a man who smiled often. This was not a tendency that earned him much goodwill; his smiles always had a touch of insincerity to them, as if, somehow, without saying a word, he was lying. It was something about the crinkles at his eyes, the dimples at his cheeks. All the hallmarks of a genuine smile, and yet: something ever-so-subtly off .

    This made more sense when Yue Qingyuan realized he was a traitor to Cang Qiong.
