In hindsight, Steve thinks that he was aware of it at the time. He just didn’t want to be. So he packaged up all his worries and his doubts in a little box that he kept hidden in one of the far corners of his mind. Tried to pretend that everything was great, that they were partying, that they were in love. Pretend. Nancy was right in the end.
(Or, while Nancy's bandaging Steve in the upside down, they finally get some much needed closure.)
