Summary
All he wanted to do was swallow past the bitterness and escape into sleep, no matter how dreamless. It was too late when he realized what had been offered to him was not mercy, just another leash. All they had to do was dangle the threat of leaving him another night without rest and he was complacent, keeping his mouth shut past witty and sharp-tongued replies, or apologizing with the smallest prompt.
Or, everything Spider went through left him with severe insomnia and a dependence on sleep aids.

Summary
He does experience guilt in thinking this, but with Spider asleep, the shack feels like a haven. The lights in here are dimmed— when they’re too bright, Spider wakes up more frightened and disoriented. It’s quiet too, the only sounds coming from the general hum of electricity and the ventilator that’s helping Spider breathe.
