Summary
There has always been a slight tension simmering between Lewis and Charles, hidden behind wandering eyes, covered by the dimpled smiles and bleeding through the unintentional jokes. It threatens to break the careful balance Lewis has finally managed to master between his personal and professional life, so he keeps his distance.
Charles, fed up by their constant toeing the line between friends or something more, decides to take the matters in his own hands and let it be known he would prefer to be ‘something more’, leaving Lewis scrambling to keep his sanity, and thus his restraint, intact.
AKA The one where Charles is limbo dancing with the line between friends and something more while Lewis tries to not have a breakdown every five minutes.

On July 12th 2025, Twitter likes became public again.
Charles nearly dies when he reads the news because during this time period he may have liked a couple questionable tweets—most notably Lewis Hamilton tweets: appreciation tweets, fanboy tweets, thirst tweets; everything. Everything.
“MON DIEU! FUCK! WHAT THE FUCK! OH MY GOD LEWIS WILL SEE—”
Cue muffled screams.

“What 10-questions-to-ask-your-teammate-to-get-to-know-them site did you get that one from?” Lewis laughs, as he moves to pull the balaclava over his head. They have 5 minutes until they have to be ready in the car and admittedly, this moment might not be the best time to ask this kind of question.
“No, I mean it,” Charles insists, lifting his helmet from the stand, but holding it awkwardly in his hands, maintaining eye contact. “If you were stuck, what would you do?”
Lewis places his hand on his shoulder lightly, squeezing once. “We can talk about this after the race, yes?”
There won’t be an after the race, Charles thinks bitterly, but he nods his head anyway. “Yeah,” he agrees, “after the race, sure.”

Knew you’d hate yourself afterward if I took what you offered in that haze of desperation." He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "Ignoring you wasn’t rejection. It was protection. Protecting you from your own damn self."

His mind travels through the lasts years and suddenly Lewis is able to look at a lot of things from a different perspective and with another light. Nico refusing to eat pizza with him, refusing to go cycling together, how when they ended in a bed together Lewis would caress him everywhere and sometimes think about how he seemed slimmer than he used to. Nico would sit in his lap and Lewis would mock him and call him bird bones and occasionally his eyes would lose some of their light even when he kept groaning and murmuring sweet nothings to Lewis. Lewis would ask him to come to his room to eat ice cream and something would distort Nico’s face before he shut him down to go away. Lewis will shout and yell to get a reaction from his Nico only for him to look at Lewis with nothing in his face and say something in one of the bloody millions of languages he knows and Lewis does not that would only infuriate him even more.
Lewis cannot help but wonder how many times can his heart break for the same man, how much longer is he going to have to suffer through the same feeling.
Or: in which I prove that it didn’t have to end in tragedy.

Summary
Lewis no longer remembers when it began.
The constant buzzing sound that never seemed to leave his ears, or the static filter clinging to the edge of his vision. How his skin crawled, irritated at every touch, flinching at every contact made just because his nerves were a wreck, and he forgot there were still humans around him. The agonizing headaches have been clinging to him since the moment he woke up, subsiding only a little when he's in the car. The subtle hyperventilation every time he spiralled out of thin air, then quickly pinching himself awake so he could be normal again by the time Angela came to pick him up for briefing and Quali session.
His eyes stayed planted on Charles' back, and the Monegasque was adjusting his helmet while talking to his engineers. As he always did. Lewis felt a knot in his stomach as he thought about how well he would do today.
