Summary
It had taken years. Their marriage. To become whatever this arrangement had, in time, become. Aerion had learned to live with it. To swallow his pride. To accept defeat. To eventually love Duncan with all his heart and soul. To love his children so fully they would never know what it was to want for it.
He loved his family with every part of his being. He would die for them. He would shed blood to defend them. It was the purest love the Seven had ever seen fit to grant him.
And so, he guarded it fiercely. Everything else had been taken from him. This, the thing he had once fought against, at least remained.
----
Aerion had spent his youth surviving hatred. Believing himself unworthy of love. He had endured disgrace. Exile. A marriage born of duty and guilt. He had never imagined that the life forced upon him would become the one thing he could not bear to lose.
He never realized how easily old ghost could convince him to destroy it with his own hand.
