“It's… he pulled them,” Jax blurts.
Pomni blinks up at him, uncomprehending.
“Your… ears?”
Jax nods, swallowing back the bile building in his throat.
“Pulling them hurts?” Pomni guesses.
“You… he pulled them until I–” he sucks in a breath, letting it out in a shaky exhale. “I'm not… It's like a costume, Pomni. He tore it off.”
Jax grapples with the aftermath of the torment nexus.

"Jax," she coaxes, gently. "What’s going on?"
His scowl falls lopsided, buckling under the strain of her question. He lets out a frustrated growl, runs a hand down his face.
“...Nothing, Pomni. Forget it.”
“You can talk to me,” Pomni reminds him.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Okay…” Pomni gives a hesitant nod, not wanting to feed any further into his instincts to dig his heels in and deny the obvious. “Then talk to me about nothing.”
In another life, Jax's final attempt to reach out to Pomni goes a little differently.

And yet...
Pomni glances to the tent at the center of the circus. Everyday she asks herself what she wants, what she wants to do with the absolute blinding freedom of being able to create whatever she wants. And everytime, she comes back to the same answer.
Live life together with the people she loves.
And that includes Jax.
If she has all of eternity and the freedom to do what she wants, then she knew this was something she had to try. If there was a way to reverse abstractions, then she would find out exactly how do it.
