Ranpo and Poe had already had their battle 4 years ago, when Ranpo gets an invitation to go to America for a battle of intelligence competition. Little does he know fate will bring Ranpo and Poe together again, and this time, things are different. Ranpo will not let the interesting man out of his grasp again.
Poe is conflicted when he has to work with his nemesis, but yet, he is not entirely upset.
In the midst of chaos that is American crime solving, Ranpo and Poe grow close, too close maybe. And when things take a turn the duo never thought possible, they decide to keep quite, and enjoy kt before it erupts in their faces.
But alas, it does anyway.Or: Ranpo and Poe reunite earlier in the story, but their suppressed admiration for one another become more than they thought possible, and get married while in America. But Ranpo hides this from his coworkers, because he knows two certain people will stick their nose when they don't belong, but they end up finding out later.

What he didn't account for was returning home with thoughts of a different genre altogether, accompanied with visions of messy black hair and fleeting mismatched eyes.
OR: Poe finds himself writing unsent love letters to Ranpo, pining for his rival, and working through the feelings of falling in love with the man you dedicated most of your 20's to killing. Murder mystery case and cafe date and pathetic included! faaaairly slow burn, happy ending guarenteed! i'll just make them work for it.

But when Ranpo finds himself making a gargantuan mistake whilst undercover - when he finds himself far more excited by the concept than shameful - he realizes, maybe, he doesn't have to be as alone at the top of the world as he's certain he's destined to be.
Or: Ranpo Edogawa, star reporter of the ADA, is sent off to spy on The Guild, a rival newspaper. It should've been simple, considering he'd assumed an average IQ of twenty amongst his new coworkers. And how thrilling it was that he'd been wrong.

Edgar stiffened. He shook his head and hands back and forth quickly as he yelped, “I could never impose on you like that, Ranpo-kun! I know you’re far too busy solving cases, not to mention it’ll require traveling back to America with me so–”
“You don’t know if I’m too busy until you ask me.” Ranpo cut him off.
Edgar blinked at him. He watched Ranpo’s bottom lip poke out ever so slightly in a pout. So. Stinking. Adorable. It kind of felt like he was dreaming. If that was the case he’d prefer not to wake up.
Ranpo put his hands on his hips and tapped his foot. His tone was laced with his impatience when he asked, “Well?”
“Ah. Um. Would you… that is to say… maybe be interested… in uhh…” Edgar’s words trailed off and he cleared his throat. This kind of thing was more difficult than any case he’d worked on, harsher than a bout of writer’s block before a strict deadline.
Ranpo cupped a hand over his ear and shouted, “Speak up, Poe-kun!”
“Dating me!” Edgar gasped. He quickly added, “I mean! Pretending to! B-briefly!”

Edgar stared at his phone, trying to understand if he was still sleeping or if this was some kind of joke, either from Ranpo or from his own consciousness. He blinked a couple of times, speechless, then he buried his head in the pillow, trying to process what had just happened. He was still laying in his bed, even though the clock on his phone said it was nearly noon. Nothing strange actually, he was used to staying up late at night and catching up on sleep during the whole morning, often woken up by Karl or by a call from his dear rival. But, for sure, he wasn’t used to messages like these.

All I ever wanted was a date, you gorgeous insane man, Ranpo thinks miserably as Poe stares at him with a maniacal smirk behind bangs even thicker than before. Why are you doing this to me? Did I really mess up that bad?
Ranpo pretends not to remember him at first. It's the only way to preserve his dignity while he's actually trying not to crumble under the weight of his stupid twenty year old past-self, and usually he'd rather DIE than call himself stupid.
But slowly, the embarrassment fades. Because Ranpo realises something that day, something that makes his brain stir with a very unfamiliar emotion that he thinks is called 'longing'.
Poe is so much more brilliant than Ranpo could have ever imagined.
