When Dallas texts him, I’m flying in Tuesday, getting in at 11:45, Shane thinks of all the things he might do instead, alone. He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.
Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. He doesn't set foot in Ilya's house outside of Boston. (There is no tuna meltdown.) He stops waiting for Ilya Rozanov to text him back. It's fine, until it isn't.

Summary
“It’s only a cake,” Shane says, even though they both know it isn’t.
Shane’s focus during this playoff run is unlike anything Ilya has ever seen, and he’s seen everything about Shane, always.
He’d been fully ready for Shane to be so focused on the training he’d forget the date, and might only realise it’s Ilya’s birthday once someone else brought it up.

Summary
Ilya saves the day by helping Shane calm down after the tuna meltdown, the boys actually learn to communicate much sooner than they would have otherwise, and it leads to a beautiful tradition of them staying the night with each other.

“Boys, I need you to be on your best behavior,” Ilya said seriously before shout-whispering: “Our new teammate is hockey royalty.”
Shane would have rolled his eyes if he wouldn’t have been mortified by how quiet the room suddenly turned. He raised his free hand to wave awkwardly before presenting himself: “Hi, I’m Shane - uhm, Hollander. It’s good to be here.”

It must have been Dykstra that broke the silence and before Shane could react, the guys were already getting closer, greeting him with tight handshakes and big smiles. Most of them have attended their impromptu wedding so theoretically, it wasn’t their first time meeting, but the enthusiasm seemed to have remained the same, all the attention making blood rush to Shane’s freckled cheeks.
Ilya had to force himself not to smother him with kisses right there and then.
