    Summary

Zuko had never excelled at anything. Azula was a prodigy. Uncle always knew what to say. And Father... Father was strong, iron-like. But Zuko had only ever been good at surviving. Putting one foot in front of the other in a grim show of stubborn determination, gritting his teeth and bearing it. Survival was all he had ever been taught. He knew how to do it. So when he was kidnapped by the Southern Water Tribe, he expected to fight as he always had. He didn’t expect to be taught instead how to live.

In a warring land, the Water Tribe forgave the enemy in an act of defiance. For this, he was torn from them, and this time, his wounds won't heal so easily.

Forced back into nothing but survival, the last person Zuko expected to see was Hakoda's son. Hakoda was a promise of safety. The relentless blue of Sokka’s eyes was a promise of happiness. Zuko could have both if he just reached out his hands, but he found them clutching into fists. After all, he’d been burned one too many times.

But hey, at least between Hakoda and Sokka, Zuko could appreciate the family resemblance of pure, asinine stubbornness.

[If getting wankered then redirecting lightning in an honourable self-sacrifice isn’t the epitome of adolescence then idk what is. Catch me and the girls doing exactly this next weekend.] HAHA YESS

[The man was driving a cart of cabbages into Gaoling, his ostrich-horse smelling disgusting as it trundled forward. Bato had hitched a ride with him a few miles ago and had filled the silence since. He was yet to meet anyone immune to his incessant flirting, but this man – who refused to reveal his name, being called only ‘Cabbage Man’ in Bato’s mind – seemed stubbornly impervious. He'd barely responded to Bato with more than a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. The longest sentence he strung together was when Bato commented on what Gaoling might be like, causing Cabbage Man to answer with a jaded ‘it can’t be worse than Omashu.’
“Not at all. You can get off at the next hill.” Cabbage Man grumbled.] OBLIGATORY cabbage guy appearance. also Bato flirting with everyone headcanon ACCEPTED.

[Tovah smiled, and it finally looked genuine.
“I was sent by your uncle,” she said slowly, “and the Order of the White Lotus.”] HOLY F U C K I N G SHIT WATCHMOJO TOP TEN PLOT TWISTS OF ALL TIME. SHE'S A GOOD GUY FHJGKHJSDFHJKS SHES FOR THE LADIESSSSS

im crashing out you motherfucker you oh my god chapter 28 im gonna scream what the FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK

this fic is ripping me apart jfc
it's midnight summer reading time and I love this and fucking hell

[“You know,” Azula called after him, almost desperate with the need to wound, “I preferred you before you got tortured by the Earth Kingdom.”
The bluntness was supposed to be cutting, but Zuko found himself smirking, turning on his heel to walk backwards a few paces.
“And I preferred you when you were five.” Zuko said easily, before turning again and walking away, leaving Azula behind.] OW

[“Sometimes,” Azula continued, voice still so infuriatingly calm, “I walk down there, and I look at all the previous Fire Lords, and I stop in front of Azulon. Azulon, for who I was named. That's our legacy, brother. To be in that hallway.”
Zuko knew the crushing weight of those portraits. He'd felt it only recently when he stared at Sozin. He never knew Azula felt the same. He felt like he was meeting her for the first time.
“Do you want to be in that hallway?” Zuko asked carefully.
Azula turned to him with a slightly manic smile. "No,” she hummed contemplatively, before giggling, "I want to burn it to the ground.”] OW WOWOW OW THEYRE SO FUCKED UP :(

[He knew. Burning was more than a weapon, or a tool, or an excuse. It was an expression, the deepest telling of one's soul, their hopes and dreams and passions and fears, the most crude version of their heart. And Zuko had lived through each stage of burning. He had been snuffed out, he had been an inferno, he had been blazing for so long he’d forgotten what it felt like to be unburnt.
He knew. He knew fire better than most people. He'd seen it at every angle. He'd seen it thrown from cruel hands and he’d seen it held in gentle fingers. He knew the kindness of fire just as he knew the terror of it.
He knew, for how terrifying it was, fire was one of the most beautiful things in the world.
He knew now. He understood. Fire was a weighted scale, and fire was duality, and fire was life, energy, everything and nothing all at once. The more he felt, the more he burned.
    He knew now.
The art of burning was humanity.] THEY SAID THE NAME OF THE THING IN THE FUCKING THING IM ACTUALLY GONNA FUckINg CRY

    Summary

It has been a very long day.

Gus sits in the Noceda household, curled up on Luz’s couch with a blanket around his shoulders. Willow, Amity, and Luz are in Luz’s room, getting clean, dry clothes. Hunter has not left Gus’ side since they came through the portal, and even now he sits on the couch beside him, knees pulled up to his chest and an arm thrown around Gus’ shoulders.

He doesn’t want to say anything. But he keeps seeing the face of Caleb Wittebane in his mind’s eye, and the face of Caleb Wittebane is, unfortunately, the face of Hunter, Golden Guard.

    Hunter, grimwalker.

    Summary

Things had been…well, different, to say the very least. In the aftermath of Belos’ demise and de-puppetfying everyone, Hunter had been given multiple offers in terms of housing from the various adults, Darius included.

And after shifting through and considering his options, Hunter had chosen here.

Just acknowledging it made something warm and cold burst inside of Darius’ chest like fireworks. He hadn’t allowed the nerves to visibly wrack him in front of the kid, wanting to become some semblance of a grounded figure he could rely on without doubt.

He’d even almost convinced himself he was ready for it.

    Or,

Hunter takes a wee little nap and chaos ensues.

    Summary

(or, "if home is where the heart is, then we're all just fucked")

"No," Hunter insisted, "why are you here? I remember what happened at Eclipse Lake, and you don't have to act like it never happened. You don't have to pretend we're friends or anything." I don't want your pity, he thought but didn't say. Luz had told him it wasn't a nice thing to say.

"I'm not pretending," Amity said, incensed. "Hunter, I don't hate you or anything."

He scowled. "You should. I threatened Luz."

"You're not the only one who has regrets about the way they used to act, you know."

(Hunter and Amity... reach some kind of understanding.)

    Summary

"You didn't care about me then, do you only care now because he can't hurt me about it? Because I'm, what, the last thing left for you to suck up to?" The heat of tears falling down his cheeks only made him angrier. Of course she'd bring out his old, stupid tendency to cry when mad. Hunter stepped forward, forcing Lilith to step back, her palisman cocking its head at him. On a conscious level, he understood that she'd been allowed to keep her palisman so Belos could isolate her from the rest of the coven, but in that moment it felt so cuttingly unfair that it made him sick. "It doesn't change anything."

Lilith deflated visibly, her shoulders curving inward, folding her arms so she held her elbows in either palm. "No, it can't," she said, with such a softness in her voice that it left Hunter without words. "I— Titan knows this doesn't sound sincere, but, Hunter— I'm sorry."
