Soulmates are a happy thing, as love usually is.
Many others have told stories about this before, and many will tell more tales as time moves on.
Riza’s guilty pleasure was reading the books about soulmates her local library carried late at night, after finishing her chores for the day. Being Riza Hawkeye, age eleven, was a lonesome thing to be. The stories of grand romantic gestures and eternal love were a welcome escape – at least one day Riza would be loved. At least someday Riza would be cared for.
But the year she turned eleven didn’t just bring “Love Across The Continent by R.L. Armstrong” into her life, it also introduced her to Roy Mustang.
OR: Roy and Riza aren't soulmates - but destiny is something entirely man made.

Mustang turned away, and Ed followed before the thought had even properly manifested in his head.
This was wrong.
Mustang stopped at the soft, muffled thunk of Ed’s gloved automail hand colliding with the door. The man frowned at him over his shoulder, the hand not clutching the book shooting out to his side to catch himself against the wall when he stumbled over nothing.
“No. Out,” he ordered, but that flat tone of voice really did not inspire Ed to listen.
The Colonel was acting weird. If he was sick... he probably shouldn’t be alone. Not that Ed volunteered to play the bastard’s nursemaid; no, but he could call someone. He had to have friends, right? Family?
...or he could always resort to calling Lieutenant Hawkeye.

It was only then that Roy noticed the incredible disarray of the room. Papers were everywhere, crumpled or shredded; almost all the books had fallen off their shelves or were left in piles with their pages torn out; samples of dead creatures were strewn all across the floor; and worst of all, the large array that hung on a canvas above his master’s desk was cut and burned beyond recognition.
Something was wrong.
But before he could process that, his master suddenly grabbed him by the shoulders, holding him in place.
“Boy, I need you to listen to me. Very soon, a pair of men are going to arrive at the house. Those men are going to be here to arrest me. I need you to take the girl and leave before they get here. Do you understand what I’m asking you to do?”
(Age/role swap-au where Roy is the protagonist and Ed is his mentor. This AU follows the rules of FMA 2003’s universe).

People who loved and lived a bit different – and who could accept boys like Edward and souls like Al because of that.
