    Summary

It had been three weeks—three of the happiest weeks of Laurence’s life, each day bathed in a kind of surging joy he had long since given up any hope of experiencing in this lifetime—when things began to go awry.

    Summary

    Temeraire is dead.

Temeraire is dead, and Laurence’s reason for living along with him. He stumbles on, day by day, conscious of the concern of his friends and family, yet unable to care.

Until an unexpected letter leads Laurence to something even more unexpected still: a child.

What a Chinese orphan is doing on the streets of Edinburgh is anyone’s guess, including the orphan's. Tharkay, for his part, suspects foul play. Laurence can see all that is sensible in the man’s suspicions, yet once again he cannot bring himself to care. Not when the child reminds him so very strongly of that which he’s lost.

    Summary

Ever since childhood, it has been a truth universally acknowledged for Tharkay that everything good in life comes at a price. Inviting Laurence to station indefinitely at his estate implied Tharkay’s awareness and consent of Temeraire’s presence, and for all Tharkay's fondness for the creature, Temeraire remains, well, Temeraire. What Tenzing was not aware of was that, in hindsight, inevitably, he was to become subjected to Temeraire’s profound affections, which projected onto the dragon's belief that the estate and its inhabitants can be treated as dolls in a dollhouse and picked up whenever Temeraire feels appropriate.

    Summary

Laurence desires nothing more than to retire to Tharkay's estate and help Temeraire get to Parliament, for what more could he want than a place in Britain with space enough for a dragon, and the company of a dear friend? But wars rarely end so neatly. Bellicose lords, Bourbon princes, errant heirs and shadowy forces threaten to undermine the very peace that Laurence and Temeraire fought to obtain, and ruin the happiness that Laurence was just beginning to glimpse.
