A lightness fills Zuko’s chest, so warm that it’s dizzying, so dizzying that he presses one hand to his chest – he forgot that it was padded, and when his palm doesn’t land like it normally does, the feeling grows – and another to the wall, steadying himself.
“What,” Zuko croaks.

“You don’t wanna be masculine?” Luz goes back to teasing.
“I don’t know.” Hunter clams up. Why is everyone asking him to think about these things today? “Whatever. Why would you wanna be masculine?”
“Well-” Luz clears her throat and shuffles her feet. She sighs and sighs again. “I want to. I just want to.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do.” Luz shrugs. “I think about it and I want to try it.”
“Does that make you transgender?” Hunter says. “Will you get sent away?” The very thought makes his chest seize up and Hunter grabs onto her hands.
“No, no,” Luz huffs. “No one’s gonna send me away. I wouldn’t let them.”
Hunter pulls her forward and hugs her waist, face pressed into her stomach. “Good.” He can hear her heartbeat, faster than normal. “I’d come with you, anyway. I’d sneak in.”
