For the first time since starting at PTMC, Jack Abbot hesitated. Langdon and Whitaker were continuing their hurried workups, calling out their findings, seemingly oblivious to their attending frozen next to the gurney. They didn’t see the way he shook, they didn’t see the way his mouth opened and closed as words failed, they didn’t see his blank stare. He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t think. The world felt too loud, too hectic, too painful. Because right in front of Jack Abbot, lying lifeless on the gurney covered in blood and road burns was Michael Robinavitch.

Buildings, tunnels, roadways, and bridges each had their own unique risk factors, and Hizashi had made it a point to understand as much as he could about what conditions might lead to catastrophic failure.
Unfortunately, all that understanding did precisely jack shit when barely twenty meters ahead of him, right in the middle of the roadway, the earth opened up with a rumble and devoured his best friend.

He squeezed his eyes shut; but with the blood rushing in his ears, that only left his brain with three senses to work with. The metallic tang of blood in his mouth and the acrid stench in the air were nowhere near enough to drown out what his skin was screaming about.
Better to open his eyes and stare at the ugly-ass puke-green carpet. The fraying fibers were bent and twisted, and he knew that years of dirt and dust were ground down into them, but it was still better to think about his cheek being pressed against that than what he felt on his back.

His face was a pulsing mass of agony, but he made himself hold still and breathe slowly through a broken nose. The blood rolled down his cheeks like tears, dripping off his chin and staining his tuxedo.
Looking up into Hizashi’s blank face, there was no spark of recognition or remorse in his eyes as he pulled back his fist again. Shouta let himself go lax as the blow landed, moving with the force of it.
