The first surprise (besides seeing a fledgling vampire gathering rats on Rue Royale, besides feeling Lestat’s presence like an electric-shock hum beneath his skin as he followed that same fledgling into grimier, rundown corners of the city that was his, once, besides seeing Lestat miserable and quiet and clutching at his wooden mockery of a piano) is that it’s Lestat who pulls away first. The second surprise is the reason why.

After Lestat's discovery of the book Daniel Molloy released— as well as Louis' part in it— Lestat is hurt and majorly pissed off. He's stopped talking to Louis, and he doesn't really know what to do now.
Until he meets a woman he kinda vibes with outside one of his shows one night, and he decides to share his life story with someone other than Daniel Molloy, and makes a new friend.
Louis does not like this. He does not like this at all. So obviously, he does something about it.

Louis can't stand the silence that follows. “What's the right thing to do, Lestat?”
“It’s time for me to let you go.”
Or: Lestat decides that it's time to part ways. Louis has a problem with that.
