Summary
Ian Gallagher never asked to be abducted by a roguish, grumpy, and suspiciously human-looking alien. And he doesn't know if he has lost his mind when the brooding Star Knight explains that Ian is supposed to be the messiah of an alien civilization all because of a retro arcade game.
Mickey Milkovich is the son of the last Messiah and the last thing he wants to do is travel to his mother's home planet to doom another person to her fate. Not that he is given a choice. But a simple retrieval mission soon becomes something more personal when he meets the bewildered redhead.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Chicago, intruders silently murder Ian Gallagher's family and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Ian will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there are no window. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines, serving drinks, snacks, and drugs. If you don’t go along, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, and his connections to the other subjects grow stronger, Ian becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help.
