“He does,” Rae agrees easily, their voice equally certain.
“He’s never gonna tell me who it is,” Rose says.
“Definitely not,” they agree.
“I’m gonna figure it out,” Rose says.
Rae doesn’t comment on that, just dips their sponge back into the blue paint. Silently begins to layer it over the back of Rose’s hand, carefully dabbing to make sure that it fills the creases of her knuckles, the dips between each finger.
It’s impressive, really, how much doubt Rae manages to communicate though the gentle press of a sponge.
Whatever. Rose figured out Shane’s sexuality before he did. It shouldn’t be that much more difficult for her to figure out who his boyfriend was. She does have excellent gaydar after all. Though she really wishes it would more frequently kick in before she started sleeping with yet another gay man.
Or, Shane Hollander has a boyfriend. Rose is going to find out who it is, one way or another.

Life feels so chaotic for Shane sometimes, with all the loud noises and the unwritten rules he’s expected to follow, even though no one ever taught them to him. It’s why the bookstore feels more like home to him than anywhere else in Boston. It doesn’t ask Shane to be anything other than himself. Doesn’t ask for any more than he can give.
He can just exist here.
Shane likes slow, likes taking his time. And Ilya - without saying or doing anything in particular - makes Shane feel like that’s okay. Like he isn’t doing anything wrong by standing still sometimes.

Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. He needed to send out an SOS, but he had set his phone down somewhere and had no idea if it was in the sunroom, bedroom, or bathroom, and wasn’t about to go dash around to hunt it down. And as hard as he wracked his brain, he couldn’t come up with a single plausible explanation for his presence in Shane’s summer home other than, “I’m in love with your son. We have been fucking since we were teenagers. We have a ten year plan.”
Instead, what he choked out was, “Sorry. No English.”

Summary
It was supposed to be a joke, okay? It was supposed to be funny, and they were all supposed to get a laugh out of it. Despite all of his protests, Hayden had thought he could get Shane to see the humor in it once he gave in. Except the longer Shane decidedly didn’t find it funny, the less entertaining it became for Hayden as well.
Hayden hadn’t ever actually done a deep-dive into the whole Hollanov internet obsession. He wasn’t prepared to have the cornerstone of his worldview be destroyed by a youtube compilation video.

It’s that simple gesture, that offhanded comment, the implication that they will not, in fact, be meeting at Shane’s weird murder building tonight, that sends Ilya unraveling as he leaves the office. Because of course this is just sex for Shane. You do not invite your fuckbuddy over to take care of you. The privilege of sleeping next to someone, of grabbing ice for their bruises, of making food when they’re too tired to stand, that all falls into the hands of a lover. A real lover. Not the rival you fuck because who else could you trust to keep quiet.
OR: Ilya accidentally hits Shane too hard on the ice, and the following chain of events leaves him hollow and uncertain and wishing things could be different.
