    Summary

Kakashi refuses to meet his eyes. The confession sits heavy on his tongue, and he has to force himself to get it out.

“I’m scared that I will loose you,” he says instead of a thousand other things that cause his very soul to ache.

Obito smiles brightly, his head tilted.

“I know what I’m doing,” he says. Then, like an afterthought, he adds dismissively: “you won’t lose me.”

I did, once, Kakashi doesn’t say. The wound left after his death is still bleeding — and it was barely scarred over in the first place. When will his heart stop being ripped apart?

    “It’s just— I don’t want to fail.”

“Come on, Bakashi, you never do.”

If only he knew — that Kakashi couldn’t honour any of his last wishes. Not to protect Rin; not to become the sixth Hokage.

Or; after the fourth shinobi war ends, Kakashi is dying. His students come up with a brilliant solution. And now he’s four and has to relive puberty again.

Or or; Kakashi wakes up in the past, a year before his father commits suicide. He makes a few changes.

    Summary

Cursed spirits are usually born knowing what they were supposed to do, apparently.

"Apparently" is pretty dubious because Obito was not exactly born but more like spat out of death's stomach with absolutely no idea of what to do next.

On the upside (more like downside) there's a Kakashi-look alike with a god complex and Obito really wants to fist fight god.

    or:

There's a new curse that Gojo Satoru has the perfect conspiracy theory for. (To be fair, no one takes interdimensional ninja into account.)

ex ninja terrorist turned curse incites the intrigue of Gojo Satoru? more likely than you think.

    ---

    "You chose him."

    *

He could not have saved Obito from death, only delayed it for a few hours. He did not have the world in his hands, and he was going to end up in the clan genealogy as a severe warning for generations to come.

But it was not a god that Obito thought of as he died. He did not pray, he did not think of the afterlife, what he thought of was Hatake Kakashi—an imperfect god who bled red. He did not pray for saving in that moment when he could’ve—should’ve. He did not cry, and he did not beg. He thought about Hatake Kakashi, and he thought about how to best let Hatake Kakashi live to see the future.

Instead, Satoru thinks that it must’ve been Hatake Kakashi who prayed and begged and cried, a sorry sight. The opposite of what a Six Eyes should be. If he was the perfect Six Eyes, then this would not have happened. He should’ve been the god to pray to, not the one praying.

In that moment, no god chose Hatake Kakashi.

It was Obito who chose him, even like so. Even with that pathetic sight, even when he has fallen from his throne, even when he’d shed blood.

“I don’t really know,” Obito admits. “Maybe it’s because he’s Kakashi.”

    *

“Kakashi’s a bit of an arrogant genius,” Obito begins. “Lectured me a lot on things I should and shouldn’t do—all about the rules. Wouldn’t stop insulting me over the slightest thing because he’s better at it than I am. He’s proud about his strength, always stood with his spine extra straight like that could make him taller—he was always shorter than me even so.”

    Satoru doesn’t speak.

“I thought he was annoying. But when I saw him cry over me with one eye bleeding, I thought it was fine if he stayed annoying as long as he could stay happy.”

Are you Gojo Satoru because you’re the strongest? Or are you the strongest because you’re Gojo Satoru?

“Kakashi should be proud, stand tall, and be annoying, because that’s just who he is, so he should just keep being that insufferable genius.”

    *

“You never took your eye back.” Not a question, a confirmation.

“No, it was a gift,” Obito says simply.

“Even when he was no longer the Hatake Kakashi you gave it to.”

Even when you were disillusioned with the world, even when you were no longer yourself, even when you were the enemy of the world—

    Even then—

“In the end, he’s still Kakashi,” Obito replies.

An unanswerable question, what a simple answer it has.

To Uchiha Obito, it was never a question.

Generations spent chasing after perfection. Little did they know that they did achieve it, but only one person had recognized it.

The answer to that unanswerable question: Hatake Kakashi is already perfect as is.

To Obito, Hatake Kakashi was perfect in his imperfection. Obito did not give Hatake Kakashi his eye to make him the strongest, he gave Hatake Kakashi his eye so Hatake Kakashi could continue to be his imperfect, perfect self.

The latch has loosened, the gap has widened, Satoru already knows what’s inside.

    He can’t avert his eyes.

“He killed you,” Satoru remarks distantly.

“Straight through the heart,” Obito responds casually. “Even as his hands shook, he hit the mark. I wanted him to.”

    *

The last piece of Obito to be seen: his heart.

Maybe there lies the difference. Maybe this is where their paths diverged.

Uchiha Obito had tried to kill his own heart, had done many, many things to accomplish this. And yet he hadn’t managed it.

He had left a piece of his heart with Hatake Kakashi, and there it had continue to exist until his death. And in the end, he’d let Hatake Kakashi take the rest of his heart.

    Unto death, and even then.

Ah. Don’t think about it any longer.

“Because he’s Kakashi,” Satoru remarks, too light for what he feels.

Obito smiles back, if only slightly. “Because he’s Kakashi, so he should see the future a bit more.”

    --

How long has it been since he had received such simple, sincere trust?

Long enough that he’s starving for it.

This is why stray dogs must not be fed, no matter how pitiful they look to your eyes, Gojo Satoru, Obito thinks. Someone should’ve taught you that. But it won’t be me.

    --

    Summary

It's a remarkable fluke that Earth has managed: sending one scientist into space on one-way trip only to discover him back in the solar system after three decades, and sending an entirely different astronaut for a circuit up to Mars and back just for disaster to strike and he's left stranded alone on the planet. Wilder still that the timelines align, and both space-farers end up on the same ship back home.

    Or:
Project Hail Mary x The Martian crossover because the parallels go crazy and I needed to think thoughts that were not just spiraling about PHM so I rewatched The Martian and roped my other favourite scifi main character into it too. Featuring the dumbest fic title I have ever come up with.

    Summary

    “Nice work today, fall guy!”

As he passed, Tom leant down and smacked the guy's ass hard enough to make him stumble, grinning to himself at his own endless skill to get on Colt’s nerves. He ducked around Colt and made to keep on walking, expecting the typical grumble and snarky comment from behind him.

Except there wasn’t a grumble, though - instead, Colt Seavers fucking squeaked.

Or - Tom Ryder doesn't know Colt has a twin.
