    Everything changes in the span of a single breath. Scenery shifts and blurs around him as Blue unmasks herself, her abra already mid-teleport, rays swirling around him before he's given the chance to argue against the choice. An almost inaudible apology is the last thing he hears before she fades alongside everything else around him.

    One moment, he's standing in the warm air and long hallways of the tournament building, making a last attempt to reach towards Blue and stop her. The next, he's crashing into a wall and falling to the floor, cold air filling his lungs, and world too blurred from the teleport to make out his surroundings.

    Just once, he wanted to be the one who protected her. Now she's taken that role again, removing him from the battle before it's even started, keeping him safe from the man who already stole their childhoods. Being the one to protect him, and putting herself into danger. Again.

     

    When Blue teleports Silver out of the gym leader tournament, he doesn't manage to get to the Ilex Forest.

    He wants it to stop.

    Every movement makes his muscles scream in protest. Every step, every breath, every slight move sends fire burning through his entire body. His lungs ache, barely holding in each breath he chokes down before forcing it out. An erratic rhythm stabs into his head as his feet pound against concrete, legs aching and burning and begging him to slow down, to stop and breathe until he doesn't stumble on each step, the pain threatening to send him plummeting face first into the ground at the first mistake he makes.

    He wants to stop, to stop running, to catch his breath and calm his racing heart and breathe until his head stops pounding.

    But he can't.

     

    They all thought Team Rocket wouldn't be a problem any longer. With Giovanni back in control after the events with Arceus, there were no signs that they were still active in the ways they had been. They had all let their guards down, believing that one of their oldest enemies was no longer a threat.

    They should have known it was a false sense of security.
