“Sergeant?” Mabbon said behind him, and the etogaur’s voice was deep and warm and made Varl smile, the soft syllables pouring over him like honey-mead sacra.
He knew he was supposed to say something back, to acknowledge the question, but when he turned and looked up, the colour of Mabbon’s eyes punched the air right out of his lungs. For a heartbeat, everything else fell away.
He opened his mouth to speak, to ask Mabbon why he’d never mentioned his eyes were the exact blue of a Tanith autumn sky. What came out was only a low, rough sound, nothing like a word.
