He watched the city skyline get farther and farther away. Neon advertisements painted the river in streaks of pink and blue, their reflections rippling across the water. A massive holo ad for The Commoner, flickered like it knew he was watching, the familiar slogan looping endlessly, “Everyone can become a hero.”
Lin Ling leaned against the panel, bag of convenience store snacks dangling from his fingers. “You don’t have anything to do tomorrow, right?”
“No. Why?” Nice glanced at him, suspicious.
“Wanna get high?” Lin Ling asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
His first thought was smoking. Gross. Ash. Tar. Cancer. Filth filling his lungs. Then Lin Ling tipped his hand, flashing the small, wrinkled plastic bag he’d confiscated earlier.
Nice’s chest tightened. “You’re kidding,” he said.
Lin Ling’s grin widened. “Do I look like I’m kidding?”

“God damn it,” I muttered and took a deep breath. Embarrassed as I was, the idea of watching him dance slowly in the dark room with another man set my newly sharpened teeth on edge. I can’t say it was out of concern for the longevity of his dancing partner’s life. Jealousy flared in me in a way I’d never known before. Both literally and figuratively, Lestat had turned me into a green-eyed monster. He smiled and reached for my hand, knowing he’d won yet another battle. It wouldn’t be his last victory, not by a long shot.
