Summary
He moves about the room silently, changing his clothes before he allows himself to crawl into bed beside you. Wrapping his arms gently around your body, careful not to wake you, is his favorite part of the day. The time when he can hold you close, feel your warmth against him, breathe you in, hear your steady breaths and heartbeat, relish the peace his love brings him.
He has to wonder if you're really okay with all of this. He's told you to call him at any time for any reason, but his phone has been completely silent. When he calls to check in, there always seems to be a waver in your response after he asks if you're okay. You don't give him a chance to address it.
He breathes you in deeply, hooking his chin over your shoulder and settling in cheek-to-cheek with you. You know you can tell him anything. He'd give you the world if you only asked. Maybe the Association is working you more than he expected. You'd tell him if something was wrong..... right?

Summary
The bed is a mess, because you're a mess. For the last few days, everything has felt awful. Even being forced to drag yourself out to the bathroom is a curse, let alone getting food or water or sunlight. You've cocooned yourself here, your own warm little haven of solitude. Your phone your only companion in these troubled times, showing you endless videos that keep your mind just barely entertained enough to forget everything else.
Unfortunately, Valko hates being forgotten. He hates being ignored. He hates that you've been cooped up all alone in here for so long, rotting away, not telling anyone a word of your dark thoughts and feelings.
Fortunately for him, he knows how to climb to your balcony and let himself in.

Enemies lurked within every corner of the palace, some of them looking you square in the face every day and hiding their true feelings behind refined, diplomatic smiles. Going along with Sylus’ plan involving the betrothal had only exacerbated opposition towards you. But despite the danger and the risks, you knew you would make the same choice again if you were given the option. You would never admit it to his face, but he was the closest thing to an equal you’d ever known. He was prideful and condescending. Powerful, unyielding, and infuriatingly charming.
You could be those things, too. You were those things. The snakes lurking in the grass meant that you couldn’t afford to not be calculating and ruthless, and Khaosi’s Sovereign understood that.Alternatively summarized you and Sylus growing maddeningly closer in the wake of a botched assassination attempt, and you come to realize that the Sovereign of Khaosi might not be faking his affection for you.

How are you supposed to reconcile that image of him with the one before you now: laid out across the couch on his stomach, just to sprawl himself across your lap. Arms wrapped around your waist. Cheek smooshed against your thigh. Nose nuzzled into your stomach. Legs too long to fit, propped up on the arm of the sofa.
