the meshing of the two fandoms' premises is so seamlessly performed here; mirroring watanuki's problem with paranormal hauntings, soleum's also got a bit of an issue with excessively clingy supernatural phenomena. you capture the feeling of perpetual dread inflicted by their predicament so vividly: soleum's meticulous, paranoid preparations to ensure his survival, the lack of agency that forces him into this undeniably unpleasant job position, the bold formatting and unsettling tenderness of the ghostly dialogue -- all of these details (and then more!) paint soleum's pitifully bleak prospects in such an incredibly immersive way. the pacing on this is just great, too: dropping us into the immediate action of soleum's new daily life, teasing out the bitter divergence in his relationships with other characters, and then -- boom, the reveal of the origin of soleum's entire unfortunate situation. one heart-crushing moment after another, agh.

gosh, the way this fic smoothly blends two familiarities together is pure, sparkling serotonin: in one hand, there’s dod’s absurd and thrilling life-or-death setting all wrapped in equal parts ruthless and comedic korean idol elimination show flavoring; in the other, we have the delightful privilege of kim soleum’s strung-out narration, held together by his monstrous levels of composure and *constantly* tested by a decidedly… unsettling, yet undoubtedly attractive host.
the way braun is depicted here is so appallingly mesmerizing — he’s oh, so terribly convincing at playing the accommodating fan, the benevolent sponsor. he’s just *so* kind, so charming: ” Can’t I take care of that for you?”, “ I added a few clauses — just for you. Doesn’t that make you feel special?”. for someone as thoughtful as braun, it’d be stranger *not* to get caught up in his flow, right?
and then he weaves in a remark so sinister so casually that it could make you laugh: “So if this information were to leak, it wouldn’t turn out good for you. Oh — and watch your step here.” the ease with which he confesses to performing a background check. threats so gentle that you’d hardly notice them slipping between your ribs. braun alternates between sweet coercion and (handsomely) grinning malice in shocking tempo. bruh. this guy’s out here moving faster than even kim soleum’s sense of self-preservation. (extremely rare phenomena, quite possibly supernatural in origin, extremely high danger rating!)
and that’s why the sense of unease throughout the entire fic is so well done: for all of his concessions and generous application of concern to kim soleum — even that, too, is an act of control. this guy, braun… he has never, ever *not* dominated the scene that he stars in — inevitable given his nature, i guess! such makes, after all, good television!
woe is poor, isolated isekai salaryman kim soleum… a non consensual high stakes career shift is unfortunately set in your future. work hard!!

aside from the above the other daydream cameos are just done so intentionally and delightfully well — baek saheon’s two-faced personality in particular comes out hilariously appropriate to this setting. the innocent fishing for intel, silently sizing up his roommate, the shady online discourse, being skillfully played (into mutual torment) by kim soleum, and kim soleum pointedly ignoring his heavily misinterpreted and edited attention… impeccably delicious writing! get clowned on harder (affectionate)! gonna put that in my mouth!! -
