If you can’t tell I’ve been re-reading the Regeneration trilogy by Pat Barker and so this happened... Anyway.....
Remus and Sirius met for the first time in the early days of the First World War and were lovers throughout their time in the trenches. Remus is an ambulance driver, seeing the aftermath of the carnage each day, while Sirius is an officer responsible for sending men (if you could call them that) to their death in No Man's Land. They find brief solace with each other but can never truly get close to each other. When Remus was injured and permanently disabled he broke off their relationship. Sirius, still struggling with shell shock after over a decade, had thought Remus had died years ago of his wounds. But when they meet unexpectedly fifteen years after the end of the war old feelings rekindle themselves despite changed bodies and minds.

Sirius's eyes become distant whenever he is reminded of that fact, so today they're pressed as close as they can in Remus's bed, warm under the old quilt and a little drunk on Remus’s last bottle of cheap wine.
