    Ilya turned sharply towards the refrigerator and yanked open the door, hand moving on its own accord to the shelf where he kept his vodka. His hand stopped midair when his eyes finally caught up.

    The bottle sat exactly where it always did.

    And beside it?

    Five cans of ginger ale.

    Something sharp and vicious, dripping in rageful self loathing, twisted through his chest at the sight.

    He loved Shane Hollander.

    The realization was a punch to the gut. He almost laughed, bitterness coating his insides. Of course he did. Of course he was that stupid. Confusing sex for emotions. Pathetically falling for his rival.

    And worst of all, he was the biggest fucking idiot for believing there was even a remote possibility that Shane may love him back.

    OR - 2 times Ilya knew Shane could never love him (+1 time he was wrong).

    “Shanya, Lyubimyy. Please don’t go.” He hated the way his voice sounded, quiet and pathetic. The voice that got him hit when he spoke it around his father.
    “This is the sixth time you’ve asked in less than an hour Ilya. I’ve made up my mind.” Shane’s voice sound calm unless you knew him, then you could hear the subtle quiver that came with his anger.
    “Please, don’t leave me alone.” It was barely a whisper, but he didn’t want his voice to shake, couldn’t speak louder or risk a crack in his words.

    After a bad fight, Shane leaves their house in Ottawa to stay in his Montreal flat for the rest of the free time they have before a game, and a series of misunderstandings result in the rapid decline of Ilya's mental health.

    In the summer of 2017, Shane discovered his body could carry a baby.
    In the autumn of 2017, fear pushed Ilya out of Shane’s life.
    In the spring of 2018, Shane lost himself.
    Also in the spring of 2018, Ilya fled the country under unknown circumstances.
    In the summer of 2028, life brought Ilya back to where he least expected to find himself.
    But now he has a secret, he has to guard with his life and his freedom.
    Secrets, lies, buried truths come to light slowly. The loon calls never sounded lonelier or scarier.

    This story features mature themes, mental health issues, suicide attempt, delicate context around birth problems, and yes, male pregnancy mentioned with complications.
    The idea of the story was inspired by a post from our Spreadsheet Queen (Wadjilicious), who mentioned a crossover between Heated Rivalry and Wuthering Heights. You need to see the vision and the general idea for this to make sense. I hope you see it.
    I’ll be the first to say that I had a different approach in mind, but Ilya took over and chaos ensued.
