    Summary

"Don’t," the other Mike cuts in, fast and low and urgent. "Don’t do this here. Don’t do this in front—" his eyes slide over—”not in front of them."

"Why not?" Will's future self snaps. "You wanna talk so bad, let’s talk."

    "Not like this.”

“No—exactly like this,” he shoots back. “You don’t get to keep doing that. Acting like protecting him—yourself—is the same thing as protecting me.”

That lands harder. Quieter. More dangerous.

“You think he doesn’t deserve to know?” he goes on. “You think I didn’t?”

    “Will.” A warning.

“You wanna start with the summer?” he says. “Or should we just skip ahead to New York?” A beat. His mouth twists. “Or even better—Dustin’s graduation?”

    Summary

Steve looks between the four identical faces. “You’re not even a little curious?” he asks. “About how your other lives are going?”

    “No,” Mike answers, immediate.

    Too immediate.

Mike with the eyebrow ring snorts. The one in the tracksuit glances at Will again—just a flick of the eyes. The knight folds his hands behind his back and looks at the first Mike like he’s deeply disappointed.

    Summary

Ultimate Challenge: Will and Mike actually talk about their friendship, their fears, and why taking a break from each other probably isn't the worst thing they can do. Mike doesn't want to keep hurting Will.

Will spends the entire day playing third wheel. If Jane’s faulty lies aren’t enough, her bashing a girl’s head in takes the cake—the metaphorical cake. And Mike finds some way to blame him. On his birthday! Which no one seems to remember or care to. At dinner the air ripples with tension. Joyce rambles about a work trip and being gone for a few days. Jonathan and Argyle are too stoned to keep track of anything being said. Mike says something that manages to piss both Jane and Will off.

The night ends with no “Happy Birthday, Will”. No apology. No, “Hey, I miss hanging out with you.”

    Summary

    1989. Senior year.

It took nearly three years of growing apart, but Will Byers has finally gotten used to life without Mike Wheeler. He has El, he has Max, he has his art, and, as of two days ago, he has a full ride to art school in Chicago, so things are good. Right? So when Mike climbs through his window one night and stumbles back into his life, Will’s not prepared for the resurgence of old feelings—and even less prepared for the possibility that they might not be as hopeless as he always thought. With the expiration date of graduation looming, Will has to figure out not only his future, but what exactly he and Mike are to each other.
