Mother has not, in the months since your arrival, ever had company she seemed to uncomplicatedly enjoy. You wonder if she's finally decided your manners are well-ingrained enough you don't need the threat of the Board to comply. The thought does not fill you with confidence.
You don't get much time to brood on it, because out of the corner of your eye you catch Jules shifting in her seat, arm dropping casually down to dangle at her side, and she's holding—a truffle, the fancy kind Mother keeps in her cupboards and hardly ever serves to guests. You'd served them up, mouth watering, knowing you'd be lucky to get a taste off someone's fingers, and here she is, offering the whole thing.
--A mentor decides her ward's manners—and sexual experience—are fit for informal company.
